Wake Forest Baptist's Pediatric Emergency Department Temporarily Relocated

April 7, 2020

Wake Forest Baptist Health has temporarily relocated the Brenner Children’s pediatric emergency department to a newly renovated area of the adult emergency department.

Children will still be evaluated and treated by the pediatric emergency medicine experts of Brenner Children’s at this site.

Temporarily relocating the pediatric emergency department has allowed Wake Forest Baptist to open a temporary Comprehensive Acute Respiratory Evaluation (CARE) unit. Health care providers in the new CARE unit will evaluate and manage higher acuity adult patients with respiratory and infectious symptoms.

Adults who need non-respiratory emergency care will continue to be seen in the adult emergency department. Both adult and pediatric patients with lower acuity respiratory concerns are being seen in the assessment tents that are set up in front of the adult emergency department.

Once patients arrive at the emergency department areas, staff will direct them to the most appropriate site for assessment or treatment.

On March 27, Wake Forest Baptist announced the opening of 10 respiratory symptom clinics across the region to assess patients who are experiencing symptoms of respiratory illness. While patients can be assessed at these ten locations, they are not COVID-19 testing sites.

All of these efforts are part of Wake Forest Baptist Health’s commitment to address the evolving needs around COVID-19 and to meet the health care needs of those throughout our region.
