Wake Forest Baptist Professor Selected for Advisory Council of National Organization
Suzanne Craft, Ph.D., professor of gerontology and geriatric medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, is among the newest members of the national Alzheimer’s Association’s Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MSAC).
A leader in the global Alzheimer's and dementia research community, Craft will serve as an adviser to the organization’s research program and help determine priority areas for international research funding. As an MSAC member, Craft also will assist in guiding the scientific accuracy of the organization’s public education, scientific publications and public policy matters.
The Alzheimer's Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to Alzheimer's care, support and research.
Wake Forest Baptist Professor Named President-Elect of National Society
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 25, 2014 – Ashok Hemal, M.D., professor of urology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named president-elect of the Society of Urological Robotic Surgeons (SURS). Hemal will assume the role of president in fall 2016.
Hemal is a pioneer in robot-assisted and laparoscopic urologic surgery and a distinguished researcher. He serves on the editorial board of several urologic journals and has been invited by hundreds of organizations worldwide to speak and perform surgery demonstrations.
SURS works to promote and maintain the highest standards of education, research and clinical applications of computer-assisted or robotic technology as it relates to the field of urology.
Six Wake Forest Baptist Faculty Members Granted Fellowships to American College of Surgeons
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 25, 2014 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Jennifer Cannon, M.D., assistant professor of endocrine surgery; Jeffrey Carter, M.D., assistant professor of trauma and burn surgery; Anna Miller, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery; Ivo Pestana, M.D., assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery; Myron Powell, M.D., assistant professor of general and bariatric surgery; and Ryan Terlecki, M.D., assistant professor of urology, have been granted fellowships to the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
ACS admits to its fellowship program surgeons whose professional activity is devoted to surgical practice and who agree to practice by the professional and ethical standards of the organization.
Founded in 1913, ACS is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons that aims to raise the standards of surgical practice and to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient.
Wake Forest Baptist Director Elected President of International Association
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 25, 2014 – Karen Klein, M.A., E.L.S., G.P.C., director of grant development and medical editing for Biomedical Research Services and Administration at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been elected president of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) for 2014-15.
Since 2003, Klein has served on AMWA’s executive committee in a number of roles including administrator of publications. She was named a fellow of AMWA in 2006 and in 2012-13 was chair of the Medical Writing Certification Commission.
Founded in 1940, AMWA is an international professional association for biomedical communicators.
Wake Forest Baptist Recognized by Two Organizations for Workplace Wellness
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 25, 2014 –Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received the highest level of recognition from the American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Worksite program for the seventh year in a row. The achievement recognizes the Medical Center’s efforts to support its employees’ physical fitness, provide healthy eating options onsite and promote a wellness culture.
Since 2007, the Fit-Friendly Worksite program has encouraged employers to create healthy work environments.
Wake Forest Baptist also received Excellence Recognition from Prevention Partners for achieving the highest standards in workplace health and prevention. Wake Forest Baptist earned this distinction for its smoking-cessation, physical activity and nutrition initiatives.
Prevention Partners, founded in 1998, aims to build healthier schools, workplaces, hospitals and clinics.
Childress Conference Recommendations Published in National Journal
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 25, 2014 – Areport from the Childress Summit of the Pediatric Trauma Society, a conference co-hosted by the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the Pediatric Trauma Society (PTS), has been published in The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.
The conference assessed the state of pediatric trauma care in the United States and created a 10-year plan for best practices in research, treatment and education. The summit attendees were divided into four thematically focused work groups to identify challenges and opportunities to improve pediatric trauma care. White papers generated by each group after the summit form the basis of the combined report.
Attendees included 56 representatives of children's hospitals, trauma centers, research facilities and government agencies in 18 states.
