Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has accepted the resignation of Doug Edgeton, a senior executive who has handled a variety of roles since arriving in 2000. Edgeton will remain with the medical center until Feb. 29, 2012.
For the past 11 years, Edgeton has held numerous key positions, including president of Piedmont Triad Research Park (PTRP), executive vice president of administration at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and chief operating officer at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.
During his tenure at one of the nation’s preeminent academic medical centers, Edgeton has brought substantial business expertise to the academic enterprise and played a key role in recruitment of several notable faculty members, such as Anthony Atala, M.D., head of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
“His accomplishments included business development and numerous successes, such as extensive progress in the research park with construction of several new buildings and infrastructure necessary for future growth,” said John D. McConnell, M.D., chief executive officer of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. “Doug created a robust and visionary foundation for PTRP that will enable its full expansion, one of our institution’s highest priorities.”
Nathan Hatch, Ph.D., president of Wake Forest University, said, “It has been my great pleasure to work with Doug across the years. His leadership and dedication to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, the university and the research park have produced significant benefits for our institution and the community that will be enjoyed for years to come. We appreciate all that he has done and wish him much success.”
“We have seen tremendous growth in the medical center, medical school and research park in the past decade,” said Edgeton. “Many of the professional goals I set for myself and the organization have come to fruition; most recently in completing Wake Forest BioTech Place in PTRP. With that in mind, and after considerable reflection, my family and I have decided this is the best time for me to resign from my current position. My plan is to build upon all the successes and further expand my career in health care administration, research park development and research commercialization. I look forward to pursuing the next new chapter in my career and am very proud of the accomplishments at the medical center.”
“It has been a privilege to work alongside immeasurable talent which has provided me the opportunity to participate in and lead many successful initiatives,” Edgeton added. “I have and will continue to cherish my time with this great organization and I look forward to seeing it continue to achieve its mission by serving the community throughout its many endeavors.“
Wake Forest Baptist will conduct a national search for his successor.
