CEO McConnell is Named Chamber of Commerce Chairman

John D. McConnell, M.D., chief executive officer of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been namedchairman of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce for 2012.

McConnell succeeds Alan Caldwell, director of community and civic engagement at Reynolds American Inc.

“We are honored and fortunate to have Dr. McConnell leading the chamber in 2012,” said Gayle N. Anderson, the organization’s president and CEO. ”His guidance, along with that of the entire board, will be essential as we implement initiatives to support local businesses, develop our knowledge-based economy and attract and retain a talented workforce.”

The other chamber officers for 2012 are: Marc Schaefer, president and CEO of Truliant Federal Credit Union, first vice chairman; Scott Sewell, vice president of technology acquisition and development at Cook Medical Inc., second vice chairman;  Alan Proctor, Winston-Salem market president for Wells Fargo & Co., secretary; and Everett Wells, a relationship manager for Wells Fargo, treasurer.

“The economic success of our region, as always, will be driven by a healthy and growing business community,” said McConnell, who joined Wake Forest Baptist in 2008.  “I look forward to being part of the chamber team that will continue to make important contributions to this effort.”
