Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center will hold its annual Moravian star lighting and worship service Friday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
The 31-foot star is anchored to the roof of the Medical Center''s North Tower. It weighs 3,400 pounds and is constructed of 26 aluminum points attached to an octagonal-shaped center core. The eight- and 11-foot long points are covered with a vinyl-coated nylon mesh. A 150-watt floodlight illuminates each point. The star was constructed in 1992 by Cosco Sign Co. in Lexington and believed to be one of the largest Moravian stars ever built.
The star is assembled each year before the first Sunday in Advent and dismantled before the first Sunday in Epiphany.
The worship service will be held at the Medical Center employee parking lot on Cloverdale Avenue across from the Shell gas station. The Rev. Jim Doss of Union Cross Moravian Church will lead the service. The Advent/Hopewell Moravian Band will provide music.
