WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Free classes in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) will be offered at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on May 18 at five community locations. The event is sponsored by Forsyth County EMS, local fire stations, the American Heart Association and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
CPR helps restore blood flow when the heart stops from cardiac arrest. Without CPR, the brain begins to die in four to six minutes. In the United States, sudden cardiac death happens more than 600 times per day. About 75 percent of all cases occur in people’s homes.
The classes will teach “CPR for Friends and Family,” a course that provides the basics in adult CPR. It is intended for members of the public who want to be prepared to help a friend, loved one or co-worker in an emergency. The course is not designed for professional certification requirements.
