Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Wake Forest Receives Accreditation

May 21, 2001

The Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has received a 3-year accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation of Hematopoietic Cell Therapy (FACHT).

The Medical Center''s Bone Marrow Transplant Program is one of only 76 programs in the country accredited for autologous and allogeneic bone marrow and peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation, and is currently the only FACHT Accredited Transplant Program in North or South Carolina. Autologous transplantation is where the patient''s own bone marrow or stem cells are used, and allogeneic uses stem cells from a related or unrelated donor.

"This accreditation is testament to the excellent work done by our staff at the Medical Center," said David Hurd, M.D. head of the Transplant Program. "Transplantation has become the treatment of choice for a number of cancers. Through clinical trials, we compare transplant outcomes with other treatment options, so we are always evaluating the best treatments for our patients."

The Transplant Program has been approved by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) as a Transplant Center since 1994 and as a Collection Center since 1991. It is the second largest Collection Center for the NMDP in the United States.
