The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has been named a Women''s Reproductive Health Research Career Development Center. It is one of 12 centers in the United States and the only one in the Southeast.
The center is funded with a $2 million grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Its goal is to increase research in gynecology and obstetrics. Over five years, the center will train four obstetricians/gynecologists in research techniques. The goal is to help them become independently funded and continue their research.
The investigators will attend formal course work and have mentors who are established researchers. Each investigator will focus on a specific project. Two of the investigators have been selected: Margaret Harper, M.D., associate professor of Ob/Gyn, will focus on the causes of maternal fatality. David Merrill, Ph.D., M.D., associate professor of Ob/Gyn, will focus on the genetics of hypertension and pregnancy.
