Wake Forest Baptist Health recently experienced the busiest week in the 50-year history of its Abdominal Organ Transplant Program.
From Saturday, May 16 through Saturday, May 23, surgeons transplanted 15 patients, which included both living and deceased donor kidneys, kidney-pancreas and kidney after heart transplant. Some of the recipients were children.
While that was the busiest week, Saturday, May 23 marked the single busiest day in the history of the program, with five patients receiving a transplant.
“This accomplishment is a tribute not only to our transplant team, but to the operating room, anesthesiology, nursing and ICU teams, along with everyone else who played a part in making this happen for our patients,” said Robert J. Stratta, M.D., professor of surgery and director of Wake Forest Baptist’s Abdominal Organ Transplant Program. “I am incredibly proud of the teamwork that was displayed, especially in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.”
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center performs more kidney transplants than any other transplant center in North Carolina, according to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.
