Wake Forest Baptist AirCare Flight Team Wins State Paramedic Competition
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 16, 2018 – Two flight paramedics, Roger Horton, NREMT-P, and Barry McMillian, NREMT-P, with AirCare Critical Care Transport Services at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center won the North Carolina Paramedic Competition, held at the end of September in Greensboro.
Teams were graded on professionalism, knowledge and their clinical management as they faced realistic scenarios, environments and simulations within a set time limit.
AirCare is part of an EMS network serving patients in North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina and includes air (helicopter) and ground ambulances stationed in strategic locations to provide fast, safe transportation for critically ill and injured patients.
Wake Forest Baptist Receives Grant to Fund Childhood Cancer Research
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 16, 2018 – For the 10th consecutive year, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received a grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which provides support to clinical trials that give kids access to better treatments so they can live long and healthy lives.
The grant of $57,412 supports work directed by Thomas McLean, M.D., professor of pediatrics, in the section on hematology and oncology at Wake Forest Baptist’s Brenner Children’s Hospital.
St. Baldrick’s is a volunteer-powered charity dedicated to raising money for children’s cancer research and to funding the most promising research initiatives. Since 2009, it has provided more than $900,000 to support childhood cancer research trials at Wake Forest Baptist.
Chief Science Officer Named to N.C. Biotechnology Center’s Regional Advisory Committee
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 16, 2018 – Gregory Burke, M.D., chief science officer and senior associate dean for research at Wake Forest School of Medicine, has been named to the regional advisory committee for the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBC).
The advisory committee helps recruit life science companies to the Piedmont Triad region, which includes Winston-Salem, High Point, Greensboro, Burlington and other cities along the I-85 corridor.
According to the N.C. Biotechnology Center, the Piedmont Triad region is home to 81 life science companies that employ nearly 7,500 people.
Wake Forest Baptist Physician Named to State Agency
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 16, 2018 – Chadwick Miller, M.D., professor and chair of emergency medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been appointed a member of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine (NCIOM).
As a member of NCIOM, Miller will study health issues facing the state in order to help develop solutions to address these problems.
NCIOM is an independent, quasi-state agency that provides balanced, nonpartisan information on issues of relevance to the health of the state’s population.
Wake Forest Baptist Physician Appointed to N.C. Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Nov. 16, 2018 – Karen Winkfield, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of radiation oncology and director of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Office of Cancer Health Equity, has been appointed to serve as a member of the North Carolina Advisory Committee on Cancer Coordination and Control.
The committee’s mission is to facilitate the reduction of cancer incidence and mortality for all North Carolinians.
