Wake Forest Baptist Files Certificate of Need Exemption for Renovations on the Winston-Salem Campus

July 10, 2018

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has filed papers with the North Carolina Department of Health Services Regulation for an exemption from Certificate of Need (CON) review to renovate two floors on its Winston-Salem campus. Since the renovation will not change the number of the Medical Center’s existing 885 licensed beds or alter CON-governed assets, the letter is being submitted as a procedural step for construction.

The project is needed to relocate and renovate licensed acute care beds. Pediatric psychiatry will be relocated to a better physical location. In its place, a new general acute care unit will be developed with 30 licensed beds.

The renovation will accommodate 19 patient observation beds and create four minor procedure rooms. These changes are required in response to Wake Forest Baptist’s master facility planning to expand services.

Work will also allow expansion and modernization of the Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The new NICU will include 51 private rooms with two of the rooms reserved for twins. Modernization of the NICU will improve patient safety as well as the patient and family experience.

The project is expected to be finished in the latter part of 2019.
