Wake Forest Baptist Awarded $14 Million to Continue Diabetes Study
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been awarded a $14 million grant by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) to continue a national multi-center study of diabetes among children and young adults in the United States.
Wake Forest Baptist is the coordinating center for the study, Search for Diabetes in Youth, which was launched in 2000 and has study centers in five states.
The research team at Wake Forest Baptist – which is responsible for overall study coordination, data collection and management and statistical design and analyses – is headed by Ralph D’Agostino, Ph.D., professor of biostatistical sciences.
The NIDDK is part of the National Institutes of Health.
Wake Forest Baptist Researcher Receives Grant from Cancer Foundation
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 27, 2016 – Katherine L. Cook, Ph.D., assistant professor of surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received a two-year grant of $80,000 from the Prevent Cancer Foundation to support her research related to breast cancer.
The Living in Pink/Prevent Cancer Partnership Award will support Cook’s research into the prevention of obesity-induced breast cancer and tamoxifen drug resistance.
The Prevent Cancer Foundation has invested $134 million since 1985 to save lives through cancer prevention and early detection.
Wake Forest Baptist’s Chief Information Officer Cited for Leadership
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 27, 2016 – Dee Emon, chief information officer at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named by Becker's Hospital Review as one of the “100 Hospital and Health System CIOs to Know.”
Executives were recognized for leading their organizations through the technology revolution of health care, which includes overseeing electronic health record installations, new patient portals and telemedicine advancements while working to keep data secure from breaches.
Becker's Hospital Review is a monthly publication offering business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health systems.
Wake Forest Baptist Urologist Named to Foundation Board
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 27, 2016– Gopal Badlani, M.D., professor of urology and vice chair of urology clinical affairs at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has joined the Board of Directors of the Urology Care Foundation, the official foundation of the American Urological Association (AUA).
Badlani recently completed a four-year term as secretary of the AUA, which is dedicated to improving patients' lives and advancing urologic research and education.
Wake Forest Baptist Surgeon Receives Travel Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 27, 2016 – Justin Hurie, M.D., assistant professor of vascular and endovascular surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been awarded the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society (VESS) and W.L. Gore and Associates Travel Award.
The award will allow Dr. Hurie to travel to other centers of excellence in vascular surgery in order to pursue additional educational opportunities.
VESS is a national forum for young, fellowship-trained vascular surgeons.
