Wake Forest Baptist Doctor Receives Federal Grant to Study Rare Kidney Disease
Anthony J. Bleyer, M.D., professor of nephrology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been awarded a two-year, $426,250 grant by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to study a rare hereditary kidney disorder.
Bleyer will use the funds to investigate what genetic factors are associated with the rate of progression of uromodulin kidney disease (UKD), which causes kidney failure.
The study is the first major investigation of UKD to receive NIH support.
State Society Honors Wake Forest Baptist Pediatrician for Community Service
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sept. 28, 2015 – Jane Foy, M.D., professor of pediatrics at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received the David T. Tayloe Sr. Award for Outstanding Community Service from the North Carolina Pediatric Society.
The award is presented annually to a pediatrician who has made exceptional contribution, which may include efforts beyond the practice setting, in her or his local community or statewide.
Founded in 1931, the North Carolina Pediatric Society is the state affiliate Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Its mission is to empower pediatricians and its partners to foster the physical, social and emotional well-being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults.
Wake Forest Baptist Doctor Receives Public Health Award from State Association
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sept. 28, 2015 – Laura Bachmann, M.D., professor of internal medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received the 2015 Public Health Systems and Services Research Practitioner Award from the Academic Practice-Based Research Section of the North Carolina Public Health Association.
This award is given to practitioners who through their contributions to public health practice-based research advance the science of public health practice.
Bachmann currently serves as the medical director for the Guilford County Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Division and is the co-director of the Regional Alabama/North Carolina STD/HIV Prevention Training Center. Within these roles, Bachmann has worked with agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health and the American Sexually Transmitted Disease Association. She has served on multiple editorial boards and has published or co-published 45 manuscripts related to the prevention and control of STDs and HIV.
Two Wake Forest School of Medicine Students Awarded Scholarships
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sept. 28, 2015 – Wake Forest School of Medicine students Amber Carrier and Janet Baek have been awarded scholarships by national organizations.
Carrier, a member of the Class of 2016, has received an American Medical Association Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship, which provides $10,000 in tuition assistance to extraordinary students entering their fourth year of medical school.
Baek, a member of the Class of 2018, has received a National Health Service Corps Scholarship, which covers full tuition plus a living stipend for three years of medical studies.
