Wake Forest Baptist Names First Health and Wellness Officer

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has appointed William M. Satterwhite, M.D., J.D., its first chief health and wellness officer, effective Aug. 1.

In this newly created position, Satterwhite will oversee the alignment and expansion of the Medical Center’s portfolio of health-improvement services for internal, employee and community audiences.

Satterwhite, a native of Winston-Salem, received his bachelor’s degree from Davidson College and his law degree from UNC Chapel Hill.  After practicing law for five years in Charlotte, he earned his medical degree at Wake Forest School of Medicine in 1997 and completed his residency in pediatrics at Wake Forest Baptist in 2000.

Wake Forest Baptist Verified as Adult and Pediatric Burn Center

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 3, 2015 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received initial verification as a pediatric burn center and re-verification as an adult burn center by the American Burn Association (ABA) and American College of Surgeons (ACS).

These verifications indicate that Wake Forest Baptist provides high-quality patient care and meets the standards set out by the ABA and ACS for organizational structure, personnel qualifications, facilities resources and medical care services.

The ABA and ACS’s joint verification program is designed to validate that a burn center's required resources provide optimal care to burn patients from the time of injury through rehabilitation.

Wake Forest Baptist Recognized for Cardiac Care

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 3, 2015 –Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award – the highest level of recognition – for 2015.

This award recognizes an institution’s commitment to and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. It also signifies that Wake Forest Baptist has reached a goal of treating patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the award, Wake Forest Baptist consistently followed the organization’s treatment guidelines and met a standard of 90 percent for specific performance measures. This is the fourth year that Wake Forest Baptist has earned this recognition.

Wake Forest Baptist Recognized as Fit-Friendly Worksite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 3, 2015 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been recognized as a Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association (AHA) for the eighth year in a row. The achievement recognizes initiatives offered by ActionHealth, Wake Forest Baptist’s wellness program, to help faculty and staff reach their health goals.

As a 2015 Gold-level recipient, Wake Forest Baptist is recognized for promoting a wellness culture, encouraging physical activity, providing healthy eating options onsite, and implementing at least nine criteria as outlined by the AHA in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture.

Since 2007, AHA’s Fit-Friendly program has encouraged employers to create healthy work environments.

Wake Forest Baptist Assistant Professor Named to International Diabetes Research Team

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 3, 2015 – Giuseppe Orlando, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of transplant surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and researcher at the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine, has been selected to participate in a $9 million project to develop a cell-therapy product to treat diabetes without insulin injections. He is the only U.S.-based researcher.

BIOCAPAN, which stands for BIOactive implantable Capsule for PANcreatic islet immunosuppression free therapy, is a four-year project funded by the European Union through a research and innovation program. The project aims to develop an insulin-injection-free treatment, without immunosuppressants, to benefit diabetes patients who require insulin.

Orlando’s role in the project is to use regenerative medicine technologies to distill non-cellular materials from discarded pancreases. The research team hypothesizes that the material may support the function of insulin-producing cells.

Wake Forest Baptist Professor Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 3, 2015 – Gopal Badlani, M.D., professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Urology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received the 2015 Karl Storz Lifetime Achievement Award from the Endourological Society.

The award is presented annually to a senior urologist whose lifetime contributions have had a major impact on the field of endourology. Badlani, who has just completed a four-year term as secretary of the American Urological Association, is a world expert in the field of minimally invasive surgery and is a past president of the organization.

Incorporated in 1985, the Endourological Society is an international organization focused on facilitating scientific dialogue among endourologists.
