Wake Forest Baptist to Partner with D1 for New Sports Training and Therapy Facility

March 2, 2015

In its commitment to provide the best level of health care, orthopaedics and sports medicine, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is proud to announce a unique partnership with D1 Sports Training.

D1, The Home of Athletic-Based Training, specializes in making athletes faster, stronger, more agile, and explosive, while also building character. D1's programs are suitable for any gender and fitness level with results-driven programs geared towards weight-loss, general health, strength and endurance.

As the D1 medical partner, Wake Forest Baptist will provide orthopaedics/sports medicine and sports physical therapy/rehabilitative services for the jointly owned program to its patients and the D1 facility’s members.

“By adding premium sports medicine and rehabilitation services directly in the D1 training facilities, we are creating greater access and convenience for our existing patients, and offering sports medicine and orthopaedics to our region’s premier athletes, their families, and every day athletes,” said John D. McConnell, M.D., CEO, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

D1 believes replicating top college and pro-training environments is the best setting for student-athletes and adults to reach their goals. Everyone who walks through the doors of the state-of-the-art facility will be trained and treated like an elite athlete.

D1 has 27 U.S. locations with pro-athlete, sports medicine and in-house therapy partners. Pro-athlete co-owners include Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Tim Tebow, Chipper Jones, Carmelo Anthony, Herschel Walker and Jason Witten.

“The D1 model of training is well proven. Based on our experience in more than 20 other markets across the country for the past 14 years in partnership with professional athletes and orthopaedic and medical organizations, we know that the D1 experience can have a dramatic impact on the lives and performance of the community of Winston-Salem,” said Hunter Myatt, director of marketing, D1.

“D1 provides an optimal athletic training experience, they are a well-respected national brand, and the synergy between both organizations makes for a noteworthy and unique partnership in this region,” added David F. Martin, M.D., director of sports medicine and professor of orthopaedic surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and lead team physician for the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons and the Winston-Salem Dash professional baseball team. “With D1, we can offer our community a superb level of athletic training, exercise, sports medicine, and rehabilitation in one convenient location. The programs will have great appeal to high school and college athletes, pro-athletes, and weekend warriors of all ages who are serious about athletic performance.”

D1 Winston-Salem’s facility will be 43,000 square feet and located off of Stratford Road at 1901 Mooney Street near Hanes Mall. Plans for the facility incorporate a wide array of state-of-the-art features including a synthetic turf field, basketball gyms, pro-style weight room, cardio and stretching areas, and other custom D1 elements. It is expected to open in the late summer/fall of this year.

The facility is developed and owned by Sports Med Properties (www.sportsmedproperties.com), a full-service, real-estate development and management firm specializing in medical and mixed-use facilities based in Charlotte.

Sports Med Properties President Randy Russell noted, “D1 Winston-Salem marks the 16th facility we have brought to fruition with our client. We are proud to be a part of D1’s national initiative to bring health and wellness to communities across the country.”
