Wake Forest Baptist Scientist to Receive Grant to Conduct Tobacco Research
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center was one of eight institutions chosen to take part in the American Heart Association’s Tobacco Regulation and Addiction Center (A-TRAC), a national virtual research center.
Funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Federal Drug Administration, the A-TRAC grant award will provide resources to Carlos J. Rodriguez, M.D., associate professor of epidemiology and internal medicine – cardiology, and his team for their research on the perception of tobacco use in vulnerable populations and the effects of tobacco exposure on the cardiovascular system and cardiovascular health.
The total award, $19.6 million, will be distributed over a five-year period to the eight institutions and the American Heart Association.

Receives Presidential Citation from International Association
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 30, 2014 – Jorge Gutierrez-Aceves, M.D., professor of urology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, is one of six urologists nationwide to receive a Presidential Citation from the president of the American Urological Association (AUA), an international organization with more than 20,000 members. Gutierrez received this award at the organization’s annual meeting in Orlando, Fla. earlier in May.
The award was given to Gutierrez in recognition of his efforts to improve education in Latin America and build a lasting relationship between the AUA and Confederación Americana de Urología, a Latin-American urological association with more than 10,000 members in 24 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries.
Wake Forest Baptist Associate Professor
Receives Grant
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 30, 2014 – Sharon Castellino, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and director of the Long Term Cancer Survivorship program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received the Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant to fund her research on young adult cancer survivors who are at risk for premature cardiac and cardiovascular health issues.
The $250,000 grant is funded by the Hyundai Hope on Wheels (HHOW) program which is dedicated to finding a cure for pediatric cancer through research expansion and improvements to standards of care. The grant recipient is chosen by leading pediatric oncologists on HHOW’s Medical Advisory Committee.

Forest Baptist Volunteer Recognized for His Service
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 30, 2014 – Roger Jordan, volunteer at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, won the Perseverance in Volunteerism category of the Forsyth County Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards.
The Perseverance in Volunteerism award recognizes Jordan as someone who has overcome significant personal obstacles in order to engage in service to others. A cancer survivor, Jordan has volunteered at Wake Forest Baptist for 17 years.
Since 1979, the Governor’s Service Volunteer Awards have honored the true spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals, groups and businesses that make significant contributions to their community through volunteer service. Jordan was presented with his award at the annual recognition ceremony on May 14 at Salem College.
Wake Forest Baptist Manager Recognized for Patient
Advocacy
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 30, 2014 – Carla Strom, Health Equity Program Manager of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been chosen as one of the 2014 Patient Advocate Award recipients by Cancer Services.
Cancer Services is a non-profit organization in Winston-Salem that seeks to enhance the quality of life for those living with cancer and to provide the gift of life through education. Since 2001, it has recognized individuals like Strom who “do anything, anytime and in any way they can to make a positive difference in the lives of those living with cancer.”
Strom was presented with the award on May 17 at Cancer Services’ annual Survivors Day event.
Wake Forest Baptist Assistant Professor Honored by Alma Mater
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 30, 2014 – Henderson D. McGinnis, M.D., assistant professor of emergency medicine and medical director of AirCare Critical Care Transport Service at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, received the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Ashland Community and Technical College (ACTC) in Ashland, Ky.
The Award was presented at the ACTC graduation ceremony on May 9 where McGinnis was also the commencement speaker. In addition to his career success, McGinnis is on the board of directors of the Appalachian Center for Wilderness Medicine, a non-profit regional organization that addresses wilderness medicine in the Southeast.
