Former Wake Forest University Health Sciences President and CEO Inducted into Science Academy
Richard Dean, M.D., former president and CEO of Wake Forest University Health Sciences (WFUHS), was inducted into the European Academy of Sciences and Arts on March 8 in Salzburg, Austria.
Dean is recognized internationally for his work as a vascular surgeon. As leader of WFUHS, he envisioned and spearheaded the drive to expand the downtown research park, now known as Innovation Quarter, by 200 acres. The Richard H. Dean Biomedical Research Building was named in his honor.
Dean served on the Board of Directors for the Association for Academic Health Centers, the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the Board of Regents for the National Library of Medicine. He is currently on the executive committee of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center and the Board of Directors of the Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Founded in 1985, the academy takes an interdisciplinary approach to address topics faced by Europe and the world. Dean joins 25 other members in fields of medicine from the United States.
Wake Forest Baptist Named One of America’s Best Breast Centers
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2014 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been selected as one of America’s Best Breast Centers by WomenCertified, Inc., a female consumer advocacy group whose mission is to help women identify where they can get the best care.
Wake Forest Baptist earned this recognition by meeting the group’s three criteria: meeting the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers standards from the American College of Surgeons; carrying the Seal of the American College of Radiologists as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence; and scoring well on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services patient satisfaction measures, or their equivalent.
Wake Forest Baptist Associate Professor Appointed Endoscopy Society Committee Chair
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2014 – Girish Mishra, M.D., associate professor of gastroenterology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named chair of the publications committee of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the largest endoscopy society in the world.
A member of the Society since 1998, Mishra will begin his two year term in May.
ASGE, which has more than 12,000 members, is a professional organization dedicated to advancing patient care and digestive health by promoting excellence and innovation in gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Wake Forest Baptist Manager Named Specialty Practitioner of the Year
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2014 – Connie Paladenech, RRT, RCP, manager of Cardiopulmonary Rehab and Pulmonary Diagnostics at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC)’s 2013 Specialty Practitioner of the Year for Continuing Care/Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
An AARC member since 1966, Paladenech has served in the AARC House of Delegates and been active in several state societies. Paladenech currently serves on the North Carolina Society for Respiratory Care (NCSRC) board of directors. She has shared her expertise with local respiratory therapist educational programs as a member of their advisory committees and has worked with the American Lung Association and American Heart Association. In addition, Paladenech has had several publications and poster presentations at national meetings to her credit and has received numerous awards for her dedication to her profession and her patients, including the NCSRC Practitioner of the Year in 2003.
Wake Forest Baptist Assistant Professor Receives Teaching Award
WINSTON-SALEM,
N.C. – March 28, 2014 – Jennifer Jackson,
M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics at
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received the 2014 Academic Pediatric Association Teaching Faculty
Award for Junior Faculty.
Jackson is a pediatric hospitalist at Brenner Children's Hospital and is
actively involved in multiple educational activities for both residents and
medical students. She is the co-director of the pediatrics clerkship for
third-year medical students, course director of the first- and second-year
medical students' physical examination course, and director of the Foundations
of Clinical Medicine curriculum for pre-clerkship students.
Wake Forest Baptist Assistant Professor Receives Research Grant
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2014 – Sang Jin Lee, Ph.D., assistant professor of regenerative medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, received a $300,000 research grant from the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF). The grant will help fund his research on Allogeneic Decellularized Tissue Scaffolds for Reconstruction of Volumetric Muscle Loss.
The world’s leading tissue bank, MTF has been at the forefront of research focused on the transplantation of donated human tissue since 1987.
