Eisenach Receives NIH MERIT Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – September 8, 2011 –James Eisenach, M.D., professor of anesthesiology-obstetric and gynecologic anesthesia, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, is the 2011 recipient of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Method to Extend Research in Time (MERIT) award.
This is one of the highest awards given by the NIH, reflecting a distinguished career and giving the recipient up to 10 years of funding to perform research, with the additional challenge of doing something unique, innovative and high impact.
Awarded to less than five percent of NIH-funded investigators, recipients must fulfill MERIT award criteria which includes having a minimum of 10 years of independent research support from the NIH and maintaining a high degree of research productivity during their project period.
Eisenach is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is a member of several organizations and associations including the American Medical Association, American Pain Society, American Society of Anesthesiologists and many others.
Heart Center Receives ICAEL Accreditation
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – September 8, 2011 –The Heart Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received accreditation from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) in the areas of Adult Transthoracic, Adult Stress and Adult Transesophageal.
ICAEL recognized the Heart Center laboratories for the quality of patient care and echocardiographic services they provide. All laboratories that are peer-reviewed and receive accreditation must fulfill specific ICAEL standards that examine staff safety, qualified sonographers as well as the generation and retention of examination data.
The ICAEL, a non-profit organization supported by the American College of Cardiology, American Society of Echocardiography, the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and the Society of Pediatric Echocardiography, is one of six member divisions that make up the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission. With the mission to improve health care through accreditation, the ICAEL promotes quality health care within this specific medical specialty.
Wake Forest School of Medicine Chair to Lead American Heart Association's Mid-Atlantic Affiliate Board
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – September 8, 2011 –David C. Goff, M.D., Ph.D., professor of public health sciences-epidemiology and prevention at Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, will serve as president of the AHA’s Mid-Atlantic Affiliate Board for the 2011-12 fiscal year, consisting of Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, South Carolina and parts of West Virginia.
The Mid-Atlantic Affiliate is one of seven American Heart Association affiliates that make up the national organization, which was founded in 1924. Goff came to Wake Forest School of Medicine in 1996 and has volunteered with the American Heart Association since 1994.
“It is vital that we continue to improve quality of care for heart disease and stroke patients, pursue groundbreaking research, develop new technologies that can help save live, and focus on improving cardiovascular health in our communities to prevent cardiovascular disease and stroke,” said Goff. “I am proud to help lead the American Heart Association’s Mid-Atlantic Affiliate in these endeavors.”
Goff has been an AHA Mid-Atlantic Board Member since 2007 and served as President-elect from 2010-2011. His research interests include the epidemiology and prevention of heart disease and stroke with a focus on issues related to high blood pressure, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. He has published over 200 manuscripts, book chapters, and other scientific reports. He has served in a leadership role in multiple NIH, CDC, and AHA-funded studies. Goff and his family reside in Winston-Salem.
Wake Forest Baptist Opens New Family Medicine Practice
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – September 8, 2011 –Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center opened a new Family Medicine-Reynolda practice on September 6 located at 3020 Bonbrook Drive in Winston-Salem.
The practice welcomes all ages from newborns, children and teens to adults and older adults and will provide extended office hours (Monday, Wednesday, Friday 7:30 a.m. to
5 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 7p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. to Noon).
The physicians will provide expertise and care in preventive medicine, chronic disease management, office-based procedures, women’s health, pediatrics, adolescent medicine and geriatrics. The practice will also provide an on-site laboratory and diagnostic radiology services for patients.
Wake Forest Baptist Doctor Receives AHA Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – September 8, 2011 –Michael Bettmann, M.D., FAHA, professor and vice chair of the Department of Radiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received the Award of Meritorious Achievement from the American Heart Association (AHA).
This award recognizes individuals for a significant accomplishment or project that affects the AHA on a national scale. Bettmann has supported the association’s scientific council for three decades and has worked on both association publications and scientific guidelines.
Wake Forest Baptist Names Human Resources AVP
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – September 8, 2011 – John Lew, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named the Associate Vice President of Human Resources Strategy and Operations.
Lew will provide guidance to the Wake Forest Baptist Human Resources Department and to affiliated subsidiaries and external customers. This includes the areas of compliance, policy, performance, quality, communication, finance and strategic initiatives.
He has 21 years of experience in human resources, which includes 17 years with academic medical centers. Lew earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources Management and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources.
Wake Forest Baptist Fellowship Program Receives Accreditation
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – September 8, 2011 – The Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship Program of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received a three year accreditation from The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
The program has not only received its first accreditation for their Cardiothoracic (CT) Anesthesiology program, but has also received the maximum possible accreditation period of three years.
The CT Anesthesiology program trains two fellows in Adult CT Anesthesiology annually. The one year of fellowship training follows a four year residency training in Anesthesiology.
Wake Forest Baptist Professor Appointed to Training Mechanism Review Committee
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – September 8, 2011 –Bridget Brosnihan, Ph.D., professor in the Hypertension and Vascular Research Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been appointed as a member of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Training Mechanism Review Committee.
As a member of the committee, Brosnihan and other members will provide a technical merit review for training applications that focus on predoctoral, postdoctoral and short-term research training at academic institutions until the end of her term on June 30, 2015.
Brosnihan received her Ph.D. from the Case Western Reserve and completed her fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. She is a member of many organizations including the American Heart Association, American Physiological Society, Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control, Endocrine Society and the Inter-American Society of Hypertension.
Wake Forest Baptist PA Elected President of Local Organization
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – September 8, 2011 – Ryan Vann, PA-C, Hillsdale Family Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been elected president of the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (NCAPA).
Beginning January 1, 2012, Vann will serve a one-year term as president-elect and a second year as the Immediate Past President. In this position, Vann will serve as the primary spokesperson for the Academy and will be promoting and advocating for the Physician Assistants profession. He will also be heavily involved in the work of the Government Affairs Committee and preside over the Academy’s Board of Directors meetings and strategic planning sessions.
During one of the two NCAPA continuing medical education conferences, Vann will serve as North Carolina’s chief delegate to the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) House of Delegates.
“I feel that it is a vitally important part of my position to mentor and encourage other PAs who are interested in leadership positions both within and outside of the Academy,” said Vann.
Vann is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After working as a Medical Technologist for two years, he continued his studies obtaining a Master of Health Sciences from the Physician Assistant program at Duke University in Durham, NC.
