Wake Forest Baptist Department of Neurology Receives Grant

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 26, 2011 – The Department of Neurology, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received a $40,000 grant from The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (MSF) in support of the development of a multidisciplinary clinic for the treatment of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Nuhad Abou Zeid, M.D., assistant professor of Neurology, applied for the grant and will develop the clinic using the model of the department’s multidisciplinary Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) clinic.

This clinical program, “A Multidisciplinary Approach to Improve MS Patient Quality of Life”, is the first in the state to offer this highly specialized service, according to Allison Brashear, M.D., professor and chair of Neurology.

Wake Forest Baptist Professor Nominated for “Building the Dream” Award

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 26, 2011 – David L. Mount, Ph.D., assistant professor of Internal Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, was nominated for the “Building a Dream” award. The award is presented by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Programming Committee, consisting of representatives from Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University.

Recipients of the award are individuals who embody qualities like that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and have actively, through his or her work and service, executed these characteristics in the community.

Each year, the award is presented to one professor or administrator and one student from each university.

Mammography Center Gains Funding from the Susan G. Komen Organization

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 26, 2011 – The Mammography Center at Downtown Health Plaza, part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received $35,000 in funding from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization.

This grant was awarded in support of one of the center’s projects, which provided mammography services during non-traditional clinic hours, over the course of three days, for women. The center also offered free mammograms for women who were uninsured and cab fare for those without transportation.

The project was designed to reduce several barriers to screening including scheduling, financial limitations and transportation.

Wake Forest University PA Student Joins the Professional Board

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jan. 26, 2011 – Ashley Thrasher, a second-year student at Wake Forest University’s Physician Assistant (PA) program, was elected as a student member and appointed to join the Board of Directors for the Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA).

This national organization, founded in 1972, represents physician assistant educational programs and provides services for faculty members, applicants, students and stakeholders.
