October 25, 2010

Marty B. Scott, M.D., vice president for Quality and Patient Safety at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga., has been named vice president of Brenner Children’s Hospital at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC), effective Oct. 25.

A leader in children’s health care and administration, Scott will serve as Brenner’s senior administrative executive. He also will have responsibilities on the quality team of the health care system at WFUBMC, and have a joint faculty appointment as a pediatric intensivist within the departments of pediatrics and anesthesiology.

“As a pediatric critical-care physician with an extensive background in patient safety, quality, hospital operations and finance, Dr. Scott brings a unique skill set to this position,” said John D. McConnell, M.D., chief executive officer of WFUBMC. “During his tenure at Memorial Health, he worked to establish a culture of reliability – working to ensure delivery of comprehensive and high quality care.”

Scott said he was drawn to Wake Forest Baptist because it is a strong, well-established academic medical center with a commitment to teaching, research and high quality care. “I want to build on Brenner’s reputation as a center of excellence so that we provide the best evidence-based care for all our patients in a safe and respectful environment,” he said.

Scott, who is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care, served as vice president at Memorial since 2007 and also held clinical responsibilities in the pediatric intensive care unit and sedation service. Earlier in his career he held several positions at Backus Children’s Hospital in Savannah, Ga., along with administrative and clinical positions at Coventry Healthcare and Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Scott has experience in physician practice management, managed care and fund raising and was president and managing partner of a pediatric critical care practice in Charlotte for 10 years. He also founded a company that provided after-hours primary care triage services for doctors in North and South Carolina, Maryland and Alabama.

Scott received his medical degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1982 and a masters degree in business from the University of North Carolina Charlotte in 2001. He completed a pediatric critical care fellowship at the University of Miami and is certified as a patient safety officer.
