January 7, 2010

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kim Hutchinson, Ed.D., R.N., [full size photo] clinical nurse specialist for behavioral health services at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been elected president of the District III North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA).

Elected this fall, she will serve through July 2010. Nurses from Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin counties are invited to become members of the NCNA District III. The NCNA is a state-level board that promotes nurses to become powerful advocates for their patients and profession. NCNA also sponsors the “Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces” recognition program that was created to recognize workplaces that have created positive work environments for nurses in North Carolina.

Hutchinson’s day-to-day role at the medical center involves conducting research and quality improvement activities, as well as development of policies, protocols, evidence-based practices and new guidelines for patient care (children, adolescents and adults). She works with interdisciplinary staff to increase their knowledge and understanding of policies and the politics of mental health.

Hutchinson also coordinates the annual mental health awareness day event in May that is hosted by Wake Forest Baptist’s Nursing Behavioral Health Leadership Team.

Hutchinson earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Fairfield University in Connecticut and completed a Master of Science in child/adolescent mental health nursing from City University of New York, a Master of Science degree in epidemiology and health services research from Wake Forest University Health Sciences and a doctorate in educational psychology with a concentration in gerontology at Northern Illinois University.
