WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The following individuals have been promoted from assistant professor to associate professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Michael L. Adler, M.D., director of clinical operations, department of Family and Community Medicine, did his postgraduate work at the University of Illinois. He completed a residency and post-doctoral training at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. He also completed post-doctoral training at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Practice.
Lorraine N. Arias, M.D., inpatient anesthesiology, did her postgraduate work at the Medical College of Virginia and completed a residency at University of Michigan Hospitals. She completed a fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. She is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Hal H. Atkinson, M.D., clinical fellowship director, geriatrics and gerontology, did his postgraduate work at the Medical University of South Carolina and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He completed his fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Alan H. Baydush, Ph.D., radiation oncology, did his undergraduate and postgraduate work in biomedical engineering at Duke University. He is board certified by the American Board of Radiology.
Sarah Bodin, M.D., inpatient anesthesiology, did her postgraduate work at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the Medical College of Georgia. She is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Sharon M. Castellino, M.D., pediatrics, did her postgraduate work at Duke University School of Medicine. She completed a residency at Duke University School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital, Boston. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics (Pediatric Hematology and Oncology).
Laura H. Coker, Ph.D., public health sciences and neurology, received her doctor of philosophy degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Christos Constantinidis, Ph.D., neurobiology and anatomy, received his doctor of philosophy degree from John Hopkins University.
Jingzhong Ding, M.D., Ph.D., internal medicine-gerontology, received his postgraduate degree from Bengbu Medical College in China. He then received a doctor of philosophy degree from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute on Aging.
Mathew S. Edwards, M.D., general surgery, received his postgraduate and medical degrees from the University of Virginia. He completed an internship, residency and fellowship at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He is board certified by the American Board of General Surgery and Vascular Surgery.
Thomas L. Ellis, M.D., neurosurgery, received his postgraduate degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He completed a residency at the University of Florida. He is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
Michael T. Fitch, M.D., Ph.D., director of the emergency medicine simulation program, earned his doctor of philosophy and medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. He is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
Jason M. Grayson, Ph.D., microbiology and immunology, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
Erica L. Hartmann, M.D., internal medicine - nephrology, completed her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of Missouri. She completed a residency at Tulane University. She completed a fellowship at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, nephrology.
James Jason Hoth, M.D., general surgery, received his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from Louisiana State University. He completedhis internship and general surgical training at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He completed a fellowship at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
John R. Hoyle, M.D., internal medicine - cardiology, received his postgraduate degree from East Carolina School of Medicine and a master’s in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed a residency and fellowship at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (cardiovascular disease and nuclear cardiology).
Fang-Chi Hsu, Ph.D., biostatistical sciences, received a bachelors of public health degree and masters in biostatistics from National Taiwan University. She completed her doctor of philosophy degree at John Hopkins University.
Steven J. Kridel, Ph.D., cancer biology, received his undergraduate degree from California State University and completed his doctor of philosophy degree at the University of California, Irvine. He attended the Burnham Institute for postdoctoral training.
George A. Kulik, D.V.M., Ph.D., cancer biology, received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Ukrainian Agricultural Academy, Ukraine. He completed a doctor of philosophy degree from the Institute of Experimental Pathology, Ukraine.
Yongmei Liu, M.D., Ph.D., epidemiology, received her doctor of philosophy degree at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and completed her medical degree at Bengbu Medical College, China.
Nadja M. Lesko, M.D., radiology, received her postgraduate degree from the University of Rochester. She completed her residency and fellowship at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She is board certified by the American Board of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.
Susan A. Melin, M.D., hematology and oncology, received her postgraduate degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She completed a residency at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine and completed a fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, medical oncology and hematology.
Judith K. Messura, D.M.D.,dentistry,received her doctor of medical dentistry from Oregon Health Sciences University. She completed her residency and fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She is board certified by the American Board of Special Care Dentistry.

Karin D. Scarpinato, Ph.D., cancer biology, received her undergraduate degree, graduate degree and postgraduate degree from Georg-August University, Germany. She completed post doctoral training at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, N.C.
Janet A. Tooze, Ph.D.,public health sciences-biostatistics, received her undergraduate degree from Earlham College, Richmond, Va. She completed a graduate degree from the Harvard School of Public Health and a doctorate degree from the University of Colorado, Health Sciences Center.
Lisa Washburn, M.D., pediatrics, received her postgraduate degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She completed a residency and a fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics (neonatal/perinatal medicine).
Deborah M. Whelan, M.D., inpatient anesthesiology, received her postgraduate degree from Louisiana State University. She completed her residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
