Sheila Sanders Selected Medical Center’s New CIO

August 28, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sheila M. Sanders has been selected as the new vice president for information services and chief information officer of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She will begin work at the Medical Center on Oct. 5.

Sanders comes to Wake Forest Baptist from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she has served as vice president for information technology and chief information officer since 2002.

At Wake Forest Baptist, Sanders will be responsible for all aspects of information technology. She will define and implement a technology vision for building upon the infrastructure already in place across the Medical Center. She will devise and implement an overall plan for Medical Center information systems, and integrate new and existing resources to better support the clinical, educational and research missions.

Sanders will lead a variety of projects already under way, including an electronic medical record for referring physician practices, completion of the computer physician-order entry system, wireless infrastructure, e-prescribing, and information technology consolidation.

Sanders will lead a team of 212 employees. She will report to Douglas L. Edgeton, the Medical Center’s executive vice president for administration.

“With 26 years of IT experience at a university that includes six health schools, Sheila Sanders has the kind of broad-based knowledge of technology and related business processes that is critical for success in this position,” Edgeton said. “She is also known for her team-building management style, a major plus in a diverse work environment such as Wake Forest Baptist.”

Sanders holds a B.S. degree in business administration from Auburn University. During her tenure at UAB, she led numerous projects including the replacement of the institution's legacy information systems. Most recently she has been focused on expansion of IT services for the research community in areas such as high performance and grid computing and the Alabama Regional Optical Network.

She replaces Katherine (Kay) C. Carr, who has served as interim CIO since April.
