WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A talk on globus, a condition that creates an uncomfortable feeling of a lump in the throat and is potentially dangerous if left untreated, will be held Thursday June 28 at 3 p.m. at BestHealth in Hanes Mall.
Susan Butler, Ph.D., of the Wake Forest Baptist Center for Voice and Swallowing Disorders, will present the causes, symptoms and treatments for those who experience this sensation on a regular basis, apart from the digestive process.
Butler explained that globus is often caused by stomach reflux in the upper esophagus, which in turn causes the upper esophageal sphincter muscle, or cricopharyngeal muscle, to go into spasm, which can cause the sensation of something stuck in the throat.
