Local Physician Included in “Women Who Dare” Calendar

September 23, 2005

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Kathi Kemper, M.D., a pediatrician at Brenner Children’s Hospital and author of “The Holistic Pediatrician,” is one of 53 women included in the Library of Congress’s 2006 engagement calendar, “Women Who Dare.”

“Each woman profiled … has excelled in her field of endeavor through hard work, talent, skill, creativity, passion, and courage, in many cases striving against seemingly insurmountable obstacles,” according to the book’s cover. The women include both “groundbreaking historical figures and brilliant contemporary achievers.”

Kemper is the Caryl J. Guth Chair for Holistic and Integrative Medicine and professor of pediatrics and public health sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

The calendar includes such notable women as Katharine Graham, newspaper owner and publisher, Margaret Thatcher, prime minister, Sandra Day O’Connor, Supreme Court justice, and Laurel Blair Salton Clark, astronaut.

The page about Kemper says her “research into the uses and effects of herbal and other alternative treatments has put her on the cutting edge of integrative medicine. When the parents of her patients asked about alternative remedies, she did what many doctors don’t: rather than dismiss their use, set out to learn more about them.”

Her book covers the treatment of 25 common ailments.

Kemper earned her medical degree and a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her residency at the University of Wisconsin and a fellowship at Yale University. She is board certified in pediatrics.
