Wake Forest Honors Bowman Gray With Monument at Medical School

October 10, 2002

Bowman Gray, the man responsible for bringing Wake Forest University School of Medicine to Winston-Salem will be honored with a six-foot statue. The monument will be unveiled Friday, Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. The public is invited.

The ceremony will take place at the medical school’s newly renovated Alumni Plaza on Hawthorne Road, which will be renamed the Bowman Gray Alumni Plaza. It’s part of a yearlong celebration of the school’s 100th anniversary. The original medical school opened in 1902 on the old campus in the community of Wake Forest near Raleigh.

Gray was the benefactor whose bequest made possible the medical school’s move to Winston-Salem in 1941. At that time, the school expanded from a two-year program to a four-year medical school and affiliated with the North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

Earline Heath King, a local artist whose work is featured in collections and major exhibits around the United States and Europe, created the bronze sculpture of Gray. King will help unveil the statue during the ceremony.

Free parking for visitors will be available on the employee parking deck on Hawthorne Road.
