Heart-Healthy Moravian Recipes Available

December 9, 1999

Moravian baked goods are a holiday tradition in many Piedmont homes. Now, thanks to a collaboration between Old Salem and the Heart Center at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, you can make heart-healthy versions of eight Old Salem recipes at home.

"We''re excited to combine the tradition of Old Salem with what we know today about preventing heart disease," said Donna Ziobro, registered dietitian with the Heart Center. "These baked good are lower in fat, cholesterol and sodium - so are better for your heart - but they retain the flavor of Old Salem."

Ziobro worked with Old Salem to create heart-healthy versions of Winkler Moravian Sugar Cake, Moravian ginger cookies, pumpkin muffins and other traditional favorites. For a free copy of the recipes, call the Heartline at 1-800-716-7730.
