The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of the Triad, Inc. is sponsoring its 5th annual "Research for a Cure" golf tournament on Saturday, Sept.18 at the Yadkin Country Club in Yadkinville.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Wake Forest University Comprehensive Cancer Center. Over the past four years the foundation has contributed over $130,500 to support research related to conquering breast cancer. "We hope to raise an additional $60,000 through this year''s tournament," said Carolyn T. Myers, a breast cancer survivor who co-founded the foundation.
Timothy E. Kute, Ph.D., an associate professor of pathology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine is the featured speaker at the tournament luncheon. He will provide an update on breast cancer research.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the United States. In North Carolina this year, more than 4,800 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed, and nearly 1,100 deaths will occur.
The Breast Cancer Foundation of the Triad, Inc. was established in 1996 by Myers and Patricia W. Hudgens, also a breast cancer survivor, to raise funds to help support breast cancer research. Ninety-two percent of all monies raised has gone directly towards research.
