WFUBMC to Operate Mobile Fitness and Rehab Unit to Serve NASCAR Winston Cup Racing

August 23, 1999

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is working with Motor Racing Outreach (MRO) to serve the fitness and rehabilitation needs of NASCAR Winston Cup Racing.

The Medical Center provides a mobile fitness and rehabilitation unit for NASCAR Winston Cup Racing drivers, crews and families. The mobile unit travels to each NASCAR Winston Cup Racing event to provide track side service. A staff of fitness trainers and rehabilitation specialists operate the unit, which contains physical fitness equipment and a computerized hospital and physician network referral system.

"The unit will enable drivers to continue their physical therapy programs on the road," said orthopaedic surgeon David F. Martin, M.D., associate professor of surgical sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and medical director of the mobile unit. AIt will also provide the racing community with education and training pertinent to injury prevention, treatment and fitness techniques."

In addition, MRO has selected the Medical Center to coordinate a network of care that will provide continuity and health-care coverage for drivers, crews and families as they travel to various sites in the NASCAR Winston Cup Racing circuit.

"In addition to physical therapy, fitness and wellness programs, the Medical Center will coordinate access to health care providers for the NASCAR Winston Cup Racing community on the road," said Martin. "We''re delighted that Motor Racing Outreach selected us to assist them in providing health and rehabilitation services for the NASCAR Winston Cup Racing family."

Motor Racing Outreach (MRO) is a multi-denominational, non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization founded in 1988 by Senior Chaplain Max Helton. Helton initiated the ministry in cooperation with three NASCAR drivers and their wives in response to the need for a "church" for the many families traveling and competing on the Winston Cup Racing circuit.
