Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist broke ground today on its new outpatient surgery center, multispecialty medical office building and cancer center in northwest Greensboro.
Located at 2909 Horse Pen Creek Rd., Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Plaza Northwest Greensboro represents a $163 million investment in the Greensboro community.
Along with an outpatient surgery center and a cancer center, the 134,000-square-foot, five-story building will include specialty services in cardiology, gastroenterology, general surgery and orthopaedics. The outpatient surgery center will have three operating rooms and two procedure rooms.
The cancer center will be part of Wake Forest Baptist’s National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and will provide seamless access to the experts, research and technology at Wake Forest Baptist and Wake Forest University School of Medicine, including opportunities to enroll in clinical trials.
There will also be infusion bays and a pharmacy on site, along with imaging and physical therapy services, all of which will allow patients to receive quicker and more convenient services close to home.
“We are thrilled to break ground on this facility that will enable our community to have easier access to the highest levels of specialized care, resources and expertise of our academic learning health system,” said Dr. Julie Freischlag, CEO and chief academic officer of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, chief academic officer of Advocate Health and executive vice president of health affairs at Wake Forest University.
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist opened its first Greensboro practice in 2006 and now has more than 35 primary, specialty and urgent care practices in the city.
“Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist continues to serve thousands of patients in Greensboro, and we are committed to growing in Guilford County and offering more convenient and high-quality health care choices for our community, close to home,” said Dr. David Zaas, president of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. “This groundbreaking marks not only the beginning of a new outpatient surgery center, multispecialty medical office building and cancer center, but furthers our commitment to continued investments and growth in Greensboro.”
Earlier this year, the health system opened Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Urgent Care New Garden, which offers care for adults and children of all ages, with extended evening and weekend hours and on-site pediatric health care providers, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Family Medicine Irving Park and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Pediatrics Northwest.
Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Plaza Northwest Greensboro is expected to open to patients in 2026.
