Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received a Star Performer designation from the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) for participation in the association’s Own the Bone program.
The AOA’s Own the Bone program is a multidisciplinary initiative to treating patients’ bone health after a fracture. The goal is to help patients understand their risk of future fractures and positively impact osteoporosis treatment.
“We’re thrilled with this recognition of our Fracture Liaison Service, a preventive-care program that works to improve bone health in older adults,” said Benjamin Graves, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Health. “This achievement illustrates our commitment to ensuring our patients receive the most comprehensive care to help them minimize their risk of suffering future fractures.”
The Own the Bone program focuses on nutrition, physical activity and lifestyle counseling in addition to bone density testing and improving patient communication.
Wake Forest Baptist was one of the first academic medical centers in the country to establish a formal fracture liaison service program and is one of only three medical centers in North Carolina to receive the AOA Own the Bone recognition.
