Dermatologists Offer Free Skin Cancer Screenings

May 8, 2018

Dermatologists with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center will offer free skin cancer screenings on Thursday, May 10 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Medical Plaza – Country Club, located at 4618 Country Club Road in Winston-Salem.

According to the American Cancer Society, more skin cancers are diagnosed in the United States each year than all other cancers combined.

Although skin cancer is the most common form of cancer and can affect anyone of any age, males and people over the age of 40 are at an increased risk. Other risk factors include smoking, having a family history of skin cancer, a high mole count, fair skin and significant exposure to sunlight or indoor tanning beds.

“We know that most skin cancer is very treatable if detected early, so that’s why we encourage people to get screened – especially anyone who has any of these risk factors,” said Amy McMichael, M.D., chair of dermatology at Wake Forest Baptist. “At last year’s free screening event, we were able to check 289 people and identified 86 possible skin cancers and 55 possible pre-skin cancers.”

No appointment is necessary and parking is free.

Wake Forest Baptist is home to the region’s leading dermatology department, treating patients from North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and beyond in a state-of-the-art clinic.
