The High Point Medical Center was awarded a $15,000 grant in March 2017 from the Delta Dental Foundation to fund a new, interactive oral hygiene display at the Millis Regional Health Education Center, located at 600 N. Elm Street. After several months of planning, design and construction, the center is ready to open the display with an official “floss cutting” event on Monday, August 28 at 4:00 p.m.
The exhibit is part of Millis’ interactive “Decay! No Way!” program, which teaches students in kindergarten through second grade about oral health habits to maintain a healthy smile. The new display uses a custom, sculpted lower jaw that provides real-time, interactive information as students “brush” with an oversized toothbrush. As they engage with the toothbrush, students learn about nutritious food choices and proper brushing techniques through a series of entertaining graphics and video explanations.
“We are thrilled to share the new dental health exhibit with groups that attend the Millis Regional Health Education Center! This exhibit will reach thousands of children each year and will give students the knowledge and understanding of proper oral hygiene,” said Wil Elder, senior development and community relations officer at High Point Medical Center.
“Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children today, yet it’s preventable. By teaching healthy dental habits at an early age, we hope to prevent dental disease and help children grow up healthy to be successful in school and in life,” said Curt Ladig, CEO of Delta Dental of North Carolina. “Exhibits and programs such as this one at the Millis Regional Health Education Center provide valuable oral health education to students in a fun and engaging way.
