Wake Forest Baptist Receives Scholarship Grant for Women Enrolled in School of Medicine
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received a $205,000 grant from the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation that will provide scholarships for women enrolled in the medical school, nurse anesthesia and physician assistant programs at Wake Forest School of Medicine during the 2016-17 academic year.
The Atlanta-based Lettie Pate Whitehead scholarship program provides scholarship grants for deserving female students with financial need at more than 200 colleges, universities and schools in nine southeastern states. The foundation also supports select elderly care facilities and has awarded more than $583 million in grants since its inception in 1946.
Wake Forest Baptist Vice President of Faith and Health Ministries Appointed to National Roundtable
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 4, 2016 – Gary Gunderson, D.Min., at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been appointed to the Institute of Medicine’s roundtable on Population Health Improvement.
As member of the roundtable, Gunderson will represent the leading edge work of FaithHealthNC which is regarded as a new care model that brings together clinical systems, public health and community partners including more than 1,500 visiting clergy to improve care of Wake Forest Baptist patients.
The roundtable brings together the broadest and most innovative thinkers in practical techniques and strategies to advance the health of the population.
Starbuck Promoted to Vice President Position
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 4, 2016 – Alisa L. Starbuck, D.N.P., has been promoted to the new position of vice president, women’s and children’s health services and executive director, Brenner Children’s Hospital at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Starbuck, formerly chief nursing officer, will be responsible for strategies, facilities, operations and quality of care for all women’s-and children’s-related patient care services of the Medical Center, its affiliations and its outreach sites.
Since joining Wake Forest Baptist in 1986, Starbuck has served in numerous leadership roles in the organization.
Lord Promoted to Vice President Position
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 4, 2016– Richard Lord, M.D., has been promoted to the new position of vice president, clinical operations-population health, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
In his new role, Lord will collaborate with clinical and academic leaders to develop the strategic vision and organizational capabilities needed to implement population health management across the Wake Forest Baptist system and its clinically integrated networks. He also will work towards further developing relationships with community partners to improve population health. Lord will maintain his duty as chair of the department of family and community medicine.
Wake Forest Baptist Names New Chair of Emergency Medicine
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 4, 2016 – Chadwick D. Miller, M.D., has been named chair of emergency medicine and executive director of emergency services at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Miller has served as interim chair of emergency medicine since June 2015.
As chair, Miller will be responsible for 13 emergency departments in this region encompassing more than 500,000 annual patient visits. Miller will direct the department’s clinical care, medical education and basic and clinical research.
Miller serves as the lead investigator on a clinical trial supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) studying the use of cardiac MRI to evaluate patients who enter the emergency department with chest pain. He also co-directs the Critical Illness, Injury and Recovery Research Center at Wake Forest Baptist and is co-principal investigator of the Wake Forest Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury Network, funded by the NIH Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
Lord joined the department of family and community medicine in 1999 and helped lead the way for the Medical Center’s development of coordinated, value-based care and enhanced patient engagement.
Pathologist Named to Endowed Chair at Wake Forest Baptist
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 4, 2016 – Barry R. DeYoung, M.D., professor of pathology, has been named the Robert W. Prichard Chair at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
The chair was established in recognition of the contributions that Robert W. Prichard, M.D., made to the department of pathology and the Medical Center. Prichard served as chair of the department of pathology for more than 20 years.
Supported by department funds, the chair was endowed to support a faculty member who serves the profession in service and leadership.
