Wake Forest Baptist Ophthalmologist Receives Society of Retina Specialists Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 29, 2013 – Shree Kurup, M.D., associate professor of ophthalmology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, was named a recipient of the 2013 Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS). The annual award recognizes ASRS members for their time and contributions as an author (or co-author), panelist, moderator and/or course faculty member at the group’s annual meeting.
Kurup’s clinical interests include uveitis, retinopathy of prematurity and vascular and choroidal retinal diseases. His research focuses on diabetic diseases, macular degeneration and auto-immune diseases.
A scientific reviewer of multiple medical journals both in ophthalmology and internal medicine, Kurup was also a chair for the International Uveitis Study Group in 2012.
The ASRS Annual Meeting was held August 24 – 28 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Wake Forest Baptist Professor Elected Vice President of College of Surgeons
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 29, 2013 – Ronald L. Davis III, M.D., FACS, associate professor of urology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been elected vice president of the N.C. Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
The ACS is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.
The letters FACS (Fellow of the American College of Surgeons) after a surgeon's name mean that the surgeon's education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College.
Davis is particularly focused on the comprehensive care of urologic cancers.
Wake Forest Baptist Pediatrician Receives Childhood Cancer Research Grant
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 29, 2013 – Sharon Castellino, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been awarded a St. Baldrick's Supportive Care Research Grant in the amount of $98,742.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research.
Castellino’s research focuses on minimizing the effects of treatment on children with brain tumors, specifically in understanding how this treatment impacts heart and brain vessel function.
Wake Forest Baptist Nurse Earns National Stroke Certification
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 29, 2013 – Ginger Warner, R.N., neurosciences, has earned national certification by the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing (ABNN) and is the first Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN) at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
First offered in May of this year, certification in stroke nursing provides formal recognition for the attainment and demonstration of knowledge necessary for the practice of stroke care. In awarding the SCRN credential, ABNN recognizes nurses who demonstrate this knowledge through successful completion of specialty certification.

Berga is an internationally recognized expert in reproductive endocrinology and infertility who has participated in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Center for Research Resources since 1994. She has been continuously funded by NIH since 1986 to investigate areas critical to women’s health. She and her team of researchers have pioneered the use of cognitive behavior therapy for stress-induced infertility.
