Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center will open the first of two buildings on its West Campus in August 2013 with orthopaedic, heart, eye and neurology services to meet the needs of the residents of Davie, Forsyth and Yadkin counties.
The four-story, 60,000 square-foot building, visible from Interstate 40 on Highway 801 in Bermuda Run, is named Wake Forest Baptist Health – Medical Plaza 1. The building will contain physician offices, physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation and a pharmacy.
Orthopaedics will be the primary specialty service offered at West Campus along with cardiology, ophthalmology and neurology. “Our research shows these specialized services are needed by residents in this area,” said John D. McConnell, M.D., chief executive officer, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. “In keeping with our mission to improve health throughout the region, our neighbors will have convenient access to high quality health care services close to their homes and businesses.”
One floor of Medical Plaza 1 will be devoted to orthopaedics. Wake Forest Baptist physicians will provide diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical services for patients with knee, shoulder, hip and hand problems, as well as conditions related to sports medicine and podiatry.
“Patients will experience the benefits of a small, high-tech medical center on our West Campus,” added McConnell. “Parking is conveniently located near the buildings and patients will quickly and easily find their way to offices and services.”
For the first time, there will be a Wake Forest Baptist cardiologist practicing in Davie County. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s heart program is nationally ranked and recognized with physicians who provide expert care for all types of cardiovascular diseases and conditions.
An ophthalmologist from Wake Forest Baptist will also have an office in the building, treating the most complex and challenging eye conditions and offering the latest diagnostic evaluations, leading-edge treatments.
In addition, a Wake Forest Baptist neurologist will see patients in Medical Plaza 1, offering treatment for a variety of brain conditions and creating a customized medical plan for each patient. More physicians will have offices in Medical Plaza 1 in the future.
Coming in October, Medical Plaza 2 will open, completing the first phase of West Campus. Medical Plaza 2 is a 101,000 square-foot building providing three services currently offered at Wake Forest Baptist Health—Davie Hospital in Mocksville. They are emergency services staffed 24/7 by Wake Forest Baptist physicians, outpatient surgery and diagnostic imaging. Medical Plaza 2 will also house a full service lab and diagnostic neurology.
Diagnostic services, including imaging, lab, cardiology and neurology, as well as physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation services are available to any patients with a physician’s order.
Once both medical plazas are open, Wake Forest Baptist expects approximately 175 people will be working on West Campus. “Our commitment of a $100 million investment and these jobs will be a catalyst for continued economic growth in Davie County,” said McConnell.
Beginning in October, Davie Hospital will provide limited services until inpatient beds are developed on West Campus later this decade.
Wake Forest Baptist will continue to operate the Medical Pavilion on Highway 601 in Mocksville, offering urgent care, family medical care and occupational medicine.
