Joslin Diabetes Center Honors Late Wake Forest Baptist Physician

April 11, 2013

The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Wake Forest Baptist Health has marked its one-year anniversary by honoring the late Steven C. Elbein, M.D.

A plaque dedicating the diabetes center to Elbein’s memory was unveiled at the facility during a brief ceremony Wednesday (April 10).

Elbein was a professor of internal medicine and chief of the section on endocrinology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center from August 2009 until his death in June 2010. The plaque cites his instrumental role in “the conceptualization and construction of this Center for the patients with diabetes whom he loved and to whom he dedicated his extraordinary academic career.”

The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Wake Forest Baptist Health is devoted to helping adult and pediatric patients better manage diabetes and to preventing the complications that often occur as a result of the disease. The facility features a multidisciplinary staff of diabetes experts and offers the full range of diabetes services in a single location.

Joslin Diabetes Center is a global leader in diabetes research, care and education. Founded in 1898, Joslin is an independent, nonprofit institution affiliated with Harvard Medical School.

The Wake Forest Baptist facility, located at Medical Plaza – Country Club, 4610 Country Club Road, is the only Joslin-affiliated center in North Carolina and one of 35 in the United States.
