Wake Forest Baptist’s Brashear Elected to American Academy of Neurology Board
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2013 – Allison Brashear, M.D., M.B.A., professor and chair of neurology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been elected to a two-year term on the board of directors of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).
Brashear, who joined the Wake Forest Baptist faculty is 2005, is a nationally recognized expert in spasticity and other movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases and botulinum toxin (Botox).
The AAN is an international professional association of more than 26,000 neurologists and neuroscience professionals dedicated to promoting the highest quality patient-centered neurologic care.
Wake Forest Baptist Rehabilitation Programs Receive Accreditation
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2013 –Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s comprehensive inpatient, brain injury, stroke specialty and amputation specialty rehabilitation programs have earned three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
The certification marks the sixth consecutive time CARF has granted three-year accreditation to rehabilitation services at Wake Forest Baptist.
CARF is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the quality, value and optimal outcomes of rehabilitation services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served.
National Kidney Foundation Honors Two Wake Forest Baptist Physicians
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2013 – Two Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center nephrologists, Barry I. Freedman, M.D., and Michael V. Rocco, M.D., have been recognized by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).
Freedman, professor of internal medicine and chief of nephrology, was selected to deliver the 18th Shaul G. Massry Distinguished Lecture while Rocco, professor of internal medicine, was named recipient of the 12th Garabed Eknoyan Award, which goes to an individual dedicated to improving the lives of people with kidney disease.
Freedman and Rocco will be honored during the NKF meeting to be held April 2-6 in Orlando, Fla.
The NKF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary-tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of those affected by kidney disease and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
Wake Forest Baptist’s Radiation Oncology Department Earns Accreditation
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2013 –Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Radiation Oncology Department has received a three-year accreditation from the American College of Radiology (ACR), the most widely recognized accrediting body in the field.
Accreditation is awarded only to facilities that meet specific guidelines and standards developed by ACR, as determined through a peer-review evaluation process.
The accreditation includes the Wake Forest Baptist-affiliated radiation oncology practices at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin and the Cancer Center of Davidson County in Lexington.
Canadian Journal Honors Article Based on Research Done at Wake Forest Baptist
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2013 – Canada’s leading medical journal has presented its top annual award to the authors of an article based on research conducted at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and two other institutions.
Wake Forest Baptist’s John A. Spangler, M.D., professor of family and community medicine, and Curt D. Furberg, M.D., now emeritus professor of public health sciences, were contributing authors on the article, which demonstrated a link between the smoking-cessation drug marketed as Chantix and cardiovascular events such as heart attacks.
CMAJ, the journal of the Canadian Medical Association, honored the researchers with the Bruce Squires Award, which each year recognizes the article “most relevant to the practice of medicine and most likely to impact it in a positive way.”
Two from Wake Forest Baptist Make Business Publication’s ‘40 Under Forty’ List
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2013 – The Business Journal of the Triad’s “40 Leaders Under Forty” list for 2013 included two representatives from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center: Reamer L. Bushardt, Pharm.D., professor and chair of physician assistant studies at Wake Forest School of Medicine, and Stephen J. Susalka, Ph.D., associate director of commercialization at Wake Forest Innovations.
The annual list names “young leaders for their accomplishments and contributions to the Piedmont Triad as well as their potential in the years to come.” The honorees were recognized at a Feb. 28 event at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and profiled in the March 1 issue of the publication.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2013 – David L. Mount, Psy.D., and Michael A. Nader, Ph.D., of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center were among the featured speakers at the TEDx event held Feb. 23 at Wake Forest University.
Mount is an assistant professor of internal medicine and director of the community partnership program at the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity. Nader is a professor of physiology and pharmacology and director of the nonhuman primate imaging of behavior program at Wake Forest School of Medicine.
TEDx events are locally organized programs licensed by the nonprofit foundation that stages TED conferences worldwide.
Wake Forest Baptist Dietitian Part of Group That Sets Guinness World Record
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – March 28, 2013 – Katie Boles, a registered dietitian with the Brenner FIT program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, was one of two instructors of a group that set a Guinness World Record for largest Zumbatomic class.
The 1,121 participants in the class, held Feb. 1 at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, were fourth- and fifth-grade students from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools system.
Zumbatomic is a version of the dance fitness program Zumba that is designed for children between the ages of 4 and 12.
