Wake Forest Baptist Faculty Member Honored by Vietnamese Health Ministry

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 30, 2012 –Ha Nguyen, Ph.D., assistant professor of family and community medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received the 2012 Most Outstanding Research Project Award from Vietnam’s Ministry of Health.

Nguyen’s project, “Elderly Health in Da Nang, Vietnam,” focused on evaluating demographic, psychosocial, psychophysiological and biologic parameters related to disability.

She was the principal investigator of the project that grew from a collaborative effort among researchers at Wake Forest School of Medicine, Pennsylvania State University, the National Institute on Aging, Sweden’s University of Jönköping and Vietnam’s Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy.

The information contained in the project can be used by local health authorities to plan new initiatives to assist older people and their families.

Wake Forest Baptist Researcher Receives Career Development Award

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 30, 2012 –
Timothy S. Pardee, M.D., Ph.D., of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received a five-year Career Development Award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health.

Pardee, assistant professor of hematology and oncology, will use the $839,000 award to study the effects of metabolism on therapy resistance in acute leukemias.

NCI Career Development Awards provide support for intensive development experiences in one of the biomedical, behavioral or clinical sciences leading to research independence.

Wake Forest Baptist Urologist Named to Institute’s Advisory Council

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 30, 2012 –
Gopal H. Badlani, M.D., professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Urology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been appointed to the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The Advisory Council meets three times annually to advise the NIDDK about its research portfolio and broad issues of science policy. Council members, who are appointed to four-year terms, are drawn from the scientific and lay communities and represent all areas within the institute's research mission.

Badlani currently serves as secretary of the American Urological Association and is a world expert in the field of urinary incontinence. He is the editor of several textbooks and has published more than 200 manuscripts and book chapters.

Wake Forest Baptist Recognized for Cardiac Care and Treatment

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 30, 2012 –
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received a 2012 Platinum Performance Achievement Award from National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) of American College of Cardiology (ACC).

This award recognizes the Medical Center for attaining compliance of 90 percent or greater for eight consecutive quarters in the composite measures of the NCDR’s ACTION Registry-GWTG, a performance-assessment and quality-improvement program that focuses on high-risk cardiac patients.

The ACTION Registry–GWTG measures patient demographics, provider and facility characteristics, transfer facility therapies, reperfusion strategies, adverse event rates, compliance with ACC and American Heart Association Clinical Guidelines and other factors in the care and treatment of high-risk cardiac patients.

Wake Forest Baptist Joint Replacement Program Earns Designation

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Aug. 30, 2012 –
The Joint Replacement Program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received the UnitedHealth Premium Specialty Center Designation in recognition of quality care.

To earn this designation, the Joint Replacement Program met extensive quality and outcomes criteria based on nationally recognized medical standards and expert advice. The criteria incorporated measurements of breadth and depth of care, staff experience, emergency care, quality and outcomes reporting.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Genetic Laboratory Receives CAP Accreditation

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 30, 2012 –
The Medical Genetics Laboratory at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

CAP accreditation recognizes excellence in service and care for all laboratory patients and the quality of procedures.

In order to gain accreditation, the laboratory must meet the high standards of the program which examines laboratory staff qualification, equipment, facilities, safety programs, records and the overall management.

The Medical Genetics Laboratory is one of more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories nationwide.

Wake Forest Baptist Blood Bank Receives AABB Accreditation

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 30, 2012 –
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Blood Bank has been granted accreditation from the AABB (American Association of Blood Banks).

AABB accredited blood banks, transfusion services and blood donor centers demonstrate the highest quality of care for patients and donors alike and are compliant with the high standards set by federal guidance documents.

Following accreditation, the Wake Forest Baptist Blood Bank will undergo an intensive on-site assessment every two years by specially trained AABB assessors to ensure consistent high performance.

The Blood Bank provides an array of blood components including testing, transfusion support and other special procedures.
