Dr. James W. Hoekstra, chair of Emergency Medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named Vice President for Clinical Business Development effective September 1, 2012. Hoekstra will continue to serve as Chair of Emergency Medicine.
In his new role, Hoekstra will oversee the clinical outreach components of Wake Forest Baptist’s strategic planning initiatives. He will help build relationships with physician practices, hospitals and health systems through expertise in the evolving health care marketplace and by coordinating strategic alliances and affiliations. He will also facilitate outreach for Wake Forest Baptist Health-Lexington Medical Center and the future Wake Forest Baptist Health-West Campus, helping to create opportunities for further system integration.
Hoekstra will coordinate chief medical officer functions at current and future affiliates and outreach sites, as well as Community Physicians. He will also provide leadership to develop and sustain off-campus services including emergency medicine, community physicians, hospitalists, telemedicine, urgent care, specialist opportunities and post-acute care to enhance system success.
“Jim Hoekstra has proven experience in expanding services and developing regional relationships,” said Thomas E. Sibert, M.D., president and chief operating officer of Wake Forest Baptist Health. “Since joining our faculty in 2003 as professor and chair, Jim has overseen the growth of the Department of Emergency Medicine from a faculty of 12 with 60,000 annual emergency department (ED) visits to more than 120 faculty with some 400,000 ED visits at more than nine sites, while growing educational and research programs at the same time.”
In addition to Wake Forest Baptist services, Hoekstra’s group oversees seven emergency departments, including Cone Health’s four EDs, and those at Wilkes Regional Medical Center, Lexington Medical Center, and now Alamance Regional Medical Center in total including 90 faculty, 50 physician assistants and nurse practitioners, and more than 300,000 patient visits.
Hoekstra earned his medical degree at the University of Michigan Medical School in 1984, and completed his residency in emergency medicine at University of Cincinnati Hospitals in 1988. His professional medical experience reflects a depth of administrative and leadership roles as well as exemplary clinical talent.
While Hoekstra will continue to chair the Department of Emergency Medicine and outreach sites, Chadwick D. Miller, M.D., executive vice chair, will assist in the Wake Forest Baptist Department of Emergency Medicine.
