Northwest AHEC Launches Mobile App for N.C. Physicians

June 12, 2012

The Northwest Area Health Education Center (AHEC) of Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of the North Carolina AHEC program, has launched CreditTrakr, a utility application (app) for Apple® mobile devices that will help North Carolina physicians keep track of their AMA PRA Category 1 and Category 2 Credits™.

CreditTrakr provides an at-a-glance status report of completed continuing medical education (CME) activities as well as a list of upcoming educational activities certified by the medical school for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. The new app replaces a pen-and-paper-based log book and provides a renewal status tracking feature that prevents physicians from having to make last minute scrambles to meet CME renewal deadlines.

The app also allows physicians to synchronize previously completed activities logged into the North Carolina AHEC Program database using their MyAHEC.net user credentials.

The CreditTrakr app assists in logging qualified activities including formal courses, journal article reading, test writing participation and participation in new procedures. The app makes it quick and easy for physicians to record these activities in just a few taps. Certificates can even be photographed and safely stored to back up paper versions that are often misplaced.

Traditional CME has often been cited as fragmented, individualistic, expert-centric, knowledge-heavy, and too focused on meeting regulatory standards. These identified shortcomings have led to greater acceptance of continuing professional development in which the focus is on data-driven self-reflection and assessment, team-based education and collaboration, and the application of knowledge within a larger system of care.

CreditTrakr will assist North Carolina physicians in their search for education based on their own professional practice gaps and demonstration of competencies such as maintenance of certification.

The CreditTrakr app is free and available for download in the Apple App Store for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod devices. For more information, visit http://nwahec.org/mobileapps or contact Christopher Jones at cjones@wakehealth.edu or (336) 713-7039.
