Wake Forest Baptist Faculty Member Joins AACI Board of Directors
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center faculty member, Frank Torti, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been chosen to sit on the board of directors for the Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI).
Torti will help the association implement its mission to promote the efforts of the 95 leading research institutions in eliminating cancer.
He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both medical oncology and internal medicine. He also is a member of several organizations including the American Association of Advancement of Science, American Association of Cancer Research, North Carolina Medical Society and the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine to name a few.
AACI represents leading academic and freestanding cancer research centers in the United States and provides a voice for cancer center directors to educate both the public and policy leaders.
Wake Forest Baptist Researcher Receives Recognition
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 10, 2011 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center doctoral candidate, Daniel Christian, has received the Enoch Gordis Predoctoral Research Recognition Award from the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA).
After completing the application process and presenting his research during an evening paper session, Christian was cited for his work on the effects of alcohol and withdrawal on neurotransmission at the recent Research Society on Alcoholism conference in Atlanta.
RSA is a society whose purpose is to give researchers the ability to share and communicate with other researchers and promote the mission of finding a way to prevent and treat alcoholism.
Wake Forest Baptist Coordinator Receives 2011 Professionalism Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 10, 2011 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical CenterDepartment of NeurologyResidency CoordinatorDiann Holland has been awarded the 2011 Professionalism in GME Program Management Award by HCPro, Inc.
The recipients of this award are honored for their leadership, teamwork and professionalism. More specifically, the HCPro looks to see if nominees:

- Advance the role of the program coordinator
- Demonstrate best practices in leadership
- Contribute to providing an excellent training environment for residents and/or fellows

As the winner of this award, Holland will receive free registration, lodging and travel expenses to HCPro's sixth annual Residency Program Management Workshop in Chicago in September.
Wake Forest Baptist Students are Published in Nurse Anesthesia Journal
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 10, 2011 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) students were recently published in the latest edition of the International Student Journal of Nurse Anesthesia (ISJNA). The class of 2011 authored seven of the 17 articles in this journal, accounting for over 40 percent of its content.
The Wake Forest Baptist CRNA students attended the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) national meeting earlier this month in Boston, where the latest edition of the ISJNA was made available to 36,000 CRNAs and over 5,000 students.
Laura Niday, Wake Forest Baptist CRNA student, was featured on the journal’s cover.
Wake Forest Baptist Doctor Receives Orthopaedist Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 10, 2011 – L. Andrew Koman, M.D., professor and chair of orthopaedics at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has received the 2011 Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist Award.
The award has been given annually since 1987 and the recipient is presented with this honor during one of the Southern Orthopaedic Association’s (SOA) annual meetings. Recipients are orthopaedists who have distinguished themselves in the orthopaedic field.
Koman has experience in the fields of pediatrics and general surgery. He is currently chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, professor of pediatrics, associate director for development and research for the Division of Surgical Sciences and the director of the Hand Fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist.
SOA’s membership is made up of over 1,400 orthopaedic physicians from across the nation. Their mission is to develop and foster scientific medicine in the specialty of orthopaedic surgery.
Wake Forest Baptist Doctor Receives Teacher Development Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – August 10, 2011 – Takashi Hirata, M.D., Department of Family and Community Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Pfizer Teacher Development Award.
This American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (AAFP) award is given to 16 community-based physicians and part-time teachers across the nation who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, great leadership qualities and dedication to family medicine.
Hirata will receive a $2,000 scholarship, framed certificate and place on the “Wall of Fame” that is showcased at the 2011 AAFP Scientific Assembly in Florida.
