Wake Forest Baptist Doctor Wins Awards for Publication
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – July 14, 2011 –Mental Health, Naturally!, a book written by Kathi Kemper, M.D., M.P.H., Center for Integrative Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, won a silver award from Nautilus Books and a gold award from Foreword Reviews.
In this book, Kemper discusses the increasing number of children and adults with mental disorders and offers advice and strategies, backed by current research, to promote mental health.
Books awarded by Nautilus Books are recognize for promoting spiritual growth, conscious living and positive social change, while stimulating the "imagination" and offering the reader "new possibilities" for a better life and a better world.
ForeWord Reviews is a journal dedicated to reviewing independently published books and was established in 1998. It serves as the flagship periodical of booksellers, librarians, agents, and publishing professionals who want to access the best titles from small presses. ForeWord also provides a myriad of services to publishers, including international trade representation, Book of the Year Awards, Clarion fee-for-review service, publicity tools for authors, and an interactive website for the reading community.
Kemper is also a professor of Pediatrics and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Pediatric Society. She received her medical degree and completed her residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Wake Forest Baptist Assistant Professor Elected Vice Speaker
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – July 14, 2011 – Laura G. Curtis, MPAS, PA-C, assistant professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, will serve as the first vice speaker of the 2011-2012 Board of Directors for the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA).
AAPA advocates and educates on behalf of the profession and the patients that physician assistants serve. AAPA works to ensure the professional growth, personal excellence and recognition of physician assistants. It also works to enhance their ability to improve the quality, accessibility and cost-effectiveness of patient-centered health care.
As the first vice speaker, Curtis will be involved with board services involving countless volunteer hours of conference calls, face-to-face meetings and participation in e-mail and e-communities.
Founded in 1968, the American Academy of Physician Assistants is the national professional society for physician assistants. It represents a profession of more than 75,000 clinically practicing PAs across all medical and surgical specialties in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the majority of the U.S. territories and within the armed forces and federal services.
Wake Forest Baptist Blood and Marrow Transplant Program Gains Accreditation
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – July 14, 2011 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Blood and Marrow Transplant Program has been awarded accreditation from The Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT).
As the only accrediting organization that focuses on the quality of cellular therapy treatment, FACT recognizes programs for their excellence in cellular therapy and their continuing efforts in providing quality care for their patients.
Organizations that are FACT-accredited must adhere to FACT Standards which are requirements set by world-renowned international teams of experts who are dedicated to the improvement and advancement of cellular therapy. These Standards also include the Cellular Therapy Standards and Core Blood Bank Standards.
The Blood and Marrow Transplant program has been performing transplants for adults and adolescents since 1990 and is also accredited by the FDA registered HPC laboratory.
Wake Forest Baptist Resident Receives Research Fellowship
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – July 14, 2011 – Cameron E. West, M.D., a resident in the dermatology department at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been awarded a research fellowship by The National Psoriasis Foundation.
West received a one-year, $24,000 fellowship to study psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. He will investigate adherence to treatment, cost effectiveness of treatment and new protocols for phototherapy, a therapy which exposes the skin to ultra-violet light. The grants are intended to increase activity in psoriatic disease research, leading to better treatments and a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, by supporting the development of additional physician researchers.
West is one of 12 early career doctors to receive a fellowship from The National Psoriasis Foundation. A total of $480,000 in research fellowships was awarded by the foundation. The fellowships team up with an established psoriatic disease investigator who will supervise the fellow's work. They also support eligible institutions in developing opportunities for physicians training for careers in academic research.
Wake Forest Baptist Wellness Program Recognized as Triad’s Healthiest Employers
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – July 14, 2011 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has been recognized by the Triad Business Journal as a 2011 Triad’s Healthiest Employers finalist in the 5,000+ employee category due to its wellness program Action Health, which offers screenings and checkups for hospital employees.
Healthiest Employer LLC provides unbiased wellness information, collected from a survey that is completed by 1,300 organizations across the country, to employers and wellness companies. Each company is ranked according to the following categories:

Launched in 1996, Action Health focuses on promoting healthy choices, illness prevention and healthy lifestyles. This program is accompanied by EXCEL, a wellness initiative that offers health-risk appraisals and wellness counseling, as well as a Health Incentive Program (HIP) that was introduced in 2001 to encourage participation.
