Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Faculty Graduates from
National Leadership Training Program
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 9, 2011 – A Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center faculty member, Gretchen L. Wells, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Internal Medicine-Cardiology, has graduated from the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (ELAM).
ELAM is a prestigious national leadership training program for women in medicine in the United States. The program’s mission is to increase the number of women in leadership positions at academic health centers and their success rate in attaining and remaining in these positions.
Wells earned her Ph.D. from the University of Alabama - Birmingham and her M.D. from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. She completed her residency, internship and fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist. She is also a member of the American College of Cardiology, American Medical Association, American College of Physicians and the American Heart Association.
Wake Forest Baptist Faculty Appointed to NIH Council
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 9, 2011 – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced the appointments of 20 individuals to the NIH Council of Councils, including Mark O. Lively, Ph.D., Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
The council was established by the NIH Reform Act of 2006 to advise the NIH director on cutting edge, trans-NIH priorities and matters related to policies and activities of the Division of Program Coordination, Planning and Strategic Initiatives, also established by the act. The council is made up of 27 members selected from the NIH Institute and Center advisory councils and the Council of Public Representatives, an advisory committee to the NIH Office of the Director.
Lively was nominated by the National Center for Research Resources and will serve until 2013. He is a professor of biochemistry with appointments in the Translational Science Institute and Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
Wake Forest Baptist Recognized as aFit-Friendly Company
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 9, 2011 –Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center has received the Start! Fit-Friendly Worksite Innovation Award from the American Heart Association (AHA). The award is given to companies that use creative methods to motivate employees toward a healthier lifestyle and only one other Worksite Innovation Award has been presented in the Triad since the award’s inception in 2009.
The award recognizes the Medical Center’s farmers markets, which encourage staff and faculty members to make healthy food choices.
“One of our goals is to educate employees about the benefits of incorporating fresh, local produce into their everyday life,” said Gretchen Bayne, health promotion and special events coordinator for the Medical Center’s ActionHealth program.
The Medical Center has also received renewed designation as an AHA platinum-level Start! Fit-Friendly Company. The designation recognizes employers that go above and beyond in providing workplace wellness programs. This is the fourth year the Medical Center has received platinum-level recognition, the highest level.
Marshall Joins Development and Alumni Affairs as Assistant Vice President
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 9, 2011 –Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center welcomes Lisa Marshall, assistant vice president of major gifts, to the Office of Development and Alumni Affairs.
Marshall, a native of Ohio, leads a team of major gifts officers and alumni affairs, and directs efforts to identify, cultivate and secure major gifts on behalf of Wake Forest Baptist Health and Wake Forest School of Medicine.
She joined the office in March from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, where she had served most recently as associate vice president for strategic gifts and foundation relations since 2007. From 2004-07, she worked in increasingly challenging roles in Case Western’s Office of Development and the School of Medicine, including associate vice president of corporate and foundation relations, interim vice president and chief development officer and vice dean for development, communications and administration.
Before embarking on a career in development and fundraising, Marshall enjoyed a successful 20 year career in banking at National City Corp. in Cleveland, Ohio. She is a graduate of Michigan State University.
ASF Names New Class of North Carolina Schweitzer Fellows
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – May 9, 2011 – Three students from Wake Forest School of Medicine were selected to join the 2011-12 class of the North Carolina Albert Schweitzer Fellowship (ASF). These graduate students will spend the next year addressing health disparities throughout North Carolina while developing lifelong leadership skills.
Joining approximately 240 other 2011-12 Schweitzer Fellows at 13 program sites throughout the U.S., the newly selected North Carolina Schweitzer Fellows, Tiffany Covas, Aldric Jones and Jonathan Stem, will partner with community-based organizations. They will develop and implement year-long, mentored service projects that sustainably address the social determinants of health, in addition to their regular graduate school responsibilities.
Upon completion of their initial year, these Fellows will become Schweitzer Fellows for Life and join a network of more than 2,000 Schweitzer alumni who are skilled in and committed to, addressing the health needs of underserved people throughout their careers as professionals. Ninety-nine percent of Fellows for Life say that their ASF experience is integral to sustaining their commitment to serve the underserved.
