Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Faculty Participates in National Leadership Training Program

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – April 19, 2011 – Two Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center faculty, Bettina Beech, Dr.P.H., professor of Social Sciences & Health Policy and Amy McMichael, M.D., professor of Dermatology, have been accepted into the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (ELAM).

ELAM is a prestigious national leadership training program for women in medicine in the United States. The program’s mission is to increase the number of women in leadership positions at academic health centers and their success rate in attaining and remaining in these positions.

Beech and McMichael will be joining 13 other women faculty from Wake Forest Baptist who have been through the ELAM program.   

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Volunteen Receives Service Award

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – April 19, 2011 –Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Volunteen Charity Byrum is the recipient of the 2011 Forsyth County Governor’s award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in the student volunteer category. 

Byrum will be honored for her service at an appreciation breakfast on May 3 at Salemtowne. The event will be hosted by HandsOn Northwest North Carolina in partnership with the United Way of Forsyth County.

To date, Byrum has contributed more than 575 hours of volunteer service. She participated in the Volunteen program for four summers and is currently volunteering every Tuesday morning during her senior year of high school.  Next year, she will attend Gardner-Webb University on a swimming scholarship.  

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Faculty Receive Awards

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – April 19, 2011 – Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center faculty, Ryan Stone, M.D., instructor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellow in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Jim Rose, Ph.D., interim chair of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, received honors at the 58th Annual Meeting of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation.

Rose received the prestigious 2011 Frederick Naftolin Award for Mentorship, which recognizes significant contributions to training and career development of society members working in the field of reproductive and women's health.

Stone received an award for one of the top presentations by a fellow in training at the March 16 – 19 meeting.His winning presentation and poster was titled, "Gender Related Effects of Prenatal Steroid Exposure on Renal Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 in Fetal Programmed Hypertension."

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Research Group Receives Award

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – April 19, 2011 – A group of faculty and research fellows from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center received the 2011 Best Poster Overall award at the 8th Annual American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS) Conference.

The award winning poster titled, “Health Related Quality of Life, Depressive Symptoms and Distress Before and After Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation” was created by Richard McQuellon, Ph.D. and Ken Zamkoff, department of Hematology and Oncology, Greg Russell, director of the Public Health Sciences Division, David Hurd, M.D., Denise Levitan, M.D., Seema Naik, M.D., Internal Medicine, Brendan McQuellon, Cassie Campbell, Katie Duckworth and Jen Sommer.

APOS is a professional organization whose mission is to advance the science and practice of psychosocial care for people with cancer.
