Janice D. Wagner, D.V.M., Ph.D, has been named Vice President/Senior Associate Dean for Research at Wake Forest School of Medicine.
A national search was conducted to fill the position, previously held by Sally Shumaker, Ph. D, professor of Social Sciences and Health Policy. Shumaker returned to her full-time academic career last year and Wagner served as the interim senior associate dean while the search was conducted.
Wagner’s responsibilities include improving operational excellence and expanding opportunities for faculty to excel in grant acquisition, research and scholarship. In her new appointment, she is charged with fostering and facilitating increased research funding opportunities, creating linkages between and among faculty to generate new partnerships, and executing the research strategic plan. Her role is to partner with the school of medicine’s dean in broadening and executing the vision of science and research at both the school and the medical center overall.
“Dr. Wagner already has demonstrated her leadership in many ways at our institution, and her vision and dedication will be instrumental in implementing new research achievements at Wake Forest School of Medicine,” said William B. Applegate, M.D., M.P.H., dean of the school of medicine. “In this post, Dr. Wagner will be instrumental in enhancing and expanding Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s research enterprise.”
Wagner is professor of Pathology (Comparative Medicine) and director of the Animal Resources Program. She is a professor in the Department of Pathology and in the Translational Science Institute, an associate in the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and member of the Diabetes Research Center.
Wagner received her doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine, a Ph.D in molecular and cellular pathobiology from Wake Forest School of Medicine, and her master’s degree in pharmacology from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Wagner is board-certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. She recently completed the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership training program in academic medicine.
