Medical Editor Named AMWA Administrator of Special Projects
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – February 23, 2011 – Karen Potvin Klein, M.A., a medical editor at Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named the 2010-2011 Administrator of Special Projects for the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA).
Klein has worked at the school of medicine for nearly 20 years. She is an associate director in the Office of Research, where she edits grant applications and manuscripts for faculty members and teaches workshops on grant and manuscript writing.
Klein holds degrees from Brown University and Wake Forest University. She began her career in medical publishing at The New England Journal of Medicine and has also worked at the Yale University School of Medicine and the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
She has completed Core and Advanced Curriculum certificates through AMWA’s education program and was named a Fellow of the association in 2006. She is also Grant Professional Certified and a board-certified editor.
Spillmann Elevated to Fellowship Status by Medical Society
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – February 23, 2011 – Scott Spillmann, M.D., M.P.H., medical director for Employee Health Services at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been elevated to Fellowship status in the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM).
Spillmann, who will be recognized in March at the College’s annual membership meeting held in Washington, D.C., has been with Wake Forest Baptist since January 1999 holding a myriad of positions ranging from assistant professor in the department of Family and Community Medicine to director and medical director for Employee Health Services. He is also the local medical director for Proctor and Gamble, Inc. and for Occupational Health Services at Davie County Hospital.
Fellow is the highest class of membership with ACOEM, an international medical society with more than 5,000 members. It recognizes physicians who have been engaged in the full-time practice of occupational and environmental medicine and who have exhibited significant leadership in ACOEM. Fellows have also demonstrated their expertise within the specialty by a Board acceptable to the ACOEM Board of Directors.
Wake Forest Baptist Receives the Spirit of North Carolina Campaigning for Excellence Award
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – February 23, 2011 –Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is this year’s recipient of the Spirit of North Carolina Campaigning for Excellence Award.
Sponsored each year by the United Way, the Spirit of North Carolina Awards program provides statewide recognition for exceptional commitment and support to local communities through their involvement with United Way.
“Our campaign directly impacts the ability for our United Way to meet the needs of our community's residents,” said Patricia Adams, M.D., chair of the 2010 Wake Forest Baptist United Way campaign and professor of Nephrology. “We increased our campaign goals by 10 percent and everyone in all parts of the Medical Center family rose to the challenge.”
The competitive awards are presented annually to honor corporate and not-for-profit organizations that demonstrate excellence in their campaigns.
