WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Thomas D. DuBose Jr., M.D., [full quality photo] the Tinsley R. Harrison Professor and Chair of Internal Medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been elected to the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians (ACP).
The Board of Regents manages the business and affairs and is the main policy-making body of the 129,000-member ACP, the largest medical-specialty organization and second-largest physician group in the United States.
DuBose, who is nationally renowned in his subspecialty of nephrology, attained the status of Master of the American College of Physicians in 2008, an honor held by fewer than 650 internists worldwide. His election to the Board of Regents is for a three-year term beginning in April.
ACP is a national organization of internists – physicians who specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses in adults. Its membership includes internists, internal medicine subspecialists, and medical students, residents and fellows.
The ACP's mission is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine.
DuBose, who received his M.D. degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, came to Wake Forest Baptist in 2002 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where he had been professor and chair of internal medicine. Prior to that he served on the faculty and administration at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
In 2006, DuBose served as president of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the largest organization of nephrologists and kidney scientists in the world. He has continued to serve the ASN as chair of the Chronic Kidney Disease Advisory Group and works jointly with the ASN and ACP as a member of task forces from both organizations on the Patient Centered Medical Home, an emerging paradigm of health care that facilitates partnerships between individual patients, and their personal physicians, and when appropriate, the patient’s family.
William B. Applegate, M.D., M.P.H., M.A.C.P., the president of Wake Forest University Health Sciences and dean of the School of Medicine, is the immediate past chair of the ACP Board of Regents.
