WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – L. Andrew Koman, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has received an honorary degree from the University of Athens in Greece.
Koman received the Doctor Honoris Causa from Christodoulos Stefanadis, professor of cardiology and dean of the Medical School of the University of Athens, in recognition of Koman’s scientific contributions in general and to education in Greece through international collaboration.
Over the years Koman has participated in meetings and seminars in Greece, providing instruction in hand surgery, pediatric orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic trauma for more than 900 medical students, residents and practicing physicians. In addition, the Department of Orthopaedics has collaborated with Greek physicians in more than 100 scientific publications and scientific presentations, as well as provided advanced training at Wake Forest Baptist.
Koman, who is president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, has been on the faculty of Wake Forest University School of Medicine since 1981.
He is also a professor of pediatrics, the associate director for development and research for the Division of Surgical Sciences, and director of the Hand Fellowship Program. He received his medical degree from Duke University and completed an orthopaedic residency and a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at Duke University Medical Center.
Koman received the Kappa Delta Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery for his work on microcirculation, the Heune Award from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America in recognition of his work on cerebral palsy and congenital hand deformities, and the Established Investigator in Clinical Sciences Award from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
He has written three books and more than 200 articles and book chapters and received numerous research grants and awards including an RO1 grant from the National Institutes of Health. His clinical practice includes specialization in hand and microsurgery and complex pediatric musculoskeletal disorders (congenital hands and cerebral palsy).
Koman has served as president of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association, the North Carolina Orthopaedic Society, the North Carolina Society for Surgery of the Hand, the Southern Orthopaedic Association and the Southeastern Hand Club, and the Piedmont Orthopaedic Society.
