WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A nursing veteran of 38 years from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has been awarded the 2009 North Carolina Perioperative Nurse of the Year Award. Brenda Davis, R.N., was honored at the April 4 meeting of North Carolina Council of Perioperative Registered Nurses, the state level of the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses.
The award was created in 1998-99 to honor operating room nurses in North Carolina who have shown distinguished service and excellent perioperative nursing standards of practice. Davis was nominated by a fellow association member and received letters of recommendation from Karen Riches, R.N., and Robert Teasdall, M.D., both members of the operating room orthopaedic team at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The award includes a plaque, certificate and a $350.
Davis has been an operating room nurse for 38 years and graduated from the three-year nursing diploma program at High Point Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1971. She received Certified Nurse Operating Room certification in 1990 and again in 2008. She has worked on the orthopedic team in the operating room at WFUBMC for the last 17 years.
Davis has served in numerous leadership positions in the local chapter of AORN including president, secretary, board member and news letter editor. She has served as a delegate to AORN National Congress four times and as a delegate to state council from the chapter for 19 years. She is very active in providing educational contact hours for seminars and chapter meetings. She has served as an officer in North Carolina Council of Perioperative Registered Nurses for the last nine years both as secretary and treasurer and was voted chair-elect at the April 4 meeting. Also at the meeting, Davis was presented a Certificate of Achievement award from her Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses chapter for “Exceptional Contribution.”
